“Robert Rudhall, once Deputy Editor of ‘Flypast’ Magazine and later author of several books about historic aircraft – including two about the making of the film ‘Battle of Britain ‘ – died today after a long illness.
I’m sure those of you who knew him would agree that he was as nice a bloke as you could meet and will be a great loss to the world of warbird journalism.
My condolences to his family.”

May I also add my condolences to Robert’s family and friends, and the staff at Flypast, – some of the board members here were treated to a talk by Robert on “The Battle of Britain” at Duxford.

A real gentleman – he will be missed.

Regarding the new DVD release of the Battle Of Britain film.

Robert, like many enthusiasts had always hoped the the Battle of Britain film would eventually be released on DVD in its original widescreen format, and had been in contact with the distributors on both sides of the Atlantic whilst researching his books.

It was Robert who informed them about the existence of the documentary Battle for the Battle of Britain, made by Christopher Doll with Michael Caine as the presenter/narrator. (Shown on the night of the premiere on what is now ITV).

Originally Robert was going to loan Hamish Mahaddie’s 16mm version of the documentary to the producers. Luckily after checking through the archives a larger format version was found. This copy has supposedly been remastered for the release.

When the DVD does finally turn up spare a thought for Robert who helped make it happen.

I have known Robert for years, first meeting him when he worked for Dowty’s at Staverton in the ’60s. This is still a terrible shock and this dear friend will be sorely missed. I last saw him at the Coventry air show last year, and never thought we would all suffer this sudden loss. A true enthusiast and gentleman.
May you meet with your idols in the sky!My heart-felt condolences to his family.

And what a good send off. Standing room only in the chapel. The newly-retired Major (Paul Day) gave an excellent, and unscripted, eulogy.

He had a fitting send off. Thoughts are now with his folks. The next few days are going to be doubly tough.

He is now added to the list of people I have to go and buzz in the Rearwin when I finally get it flying.

For those of you that didn’t know him, one of Robert’s more endearing qualities was his hatred of flying. He loved aviation but would only fly in one aeroplane by choice, and that was the Lancaster. I would have loved to take him flying but I’ll settle for dipping a wing to his memory. He would have found an excuse not to go anyhow.

At 11.30 today at Marholm in Cambridgeshire friends and family paid their last respects to Robert Rudhall.

If you do find a quiet moment today, reflect on the fact that Aircraft Presevation in the UK has lost one its greatest supporters.

So sorry to hear of Roberts passing. As I have said on another forum he was the epitome of the total aviation person. A man who was generous in praise as well as being constructive in the odd bit of gentle remonstration if valour overcame discretion. I will miss him enormously however his books will serve us all as a constant reminder of his professional skills. May he fly with the eagles and always in blue skies up there.

One of the true gentlemen of the press, it was a great pleasure and privilege to have known him.

My favourite Rudhall anecdote was when he somehow managed to leave the original ‘Battle of Britain’ film script lying around in a school room throughout a busy Duxford airshow weekend – we had to return the next day to liberate it. Miraculously it was exactly where he’d left it.

Farewell Rob – through peril to the stars…

Only ever met him at our get together last January. Was looking forward to him being editor of the LLA journal.

Thoughts to his wife who was also there last January sitting quietly at the back.

Webmaster,

May i suggest a permanent memorial online? Just a few words about his life and his involvement with the magazine, perhaps along with a photograph too. Im sure also that some people here who knew him well would lend a few words to such a page.

What do people think?

Best regards, Steve

What dreadful news.
I have read his works for many years but I only met Robert once at one of the Raydon Wings events, he left a lasting impression that will never fade. One of life’s true gentleman, we will all miss him, my thoughts are with his family and friends.

If there is “an above”, just imagine the tales that will be being swapped tonight, I bet he is taking notes !!

Goodnight Robert.
