He was obviously prepared to stand by his beliefs, which you don’t often see in politicians. And unlike some he used public transport, we once saw him at Leeds railway station.

I head him speak a couple of times and met him socially once.
Allthough much pilloried he was a great orator and a nice chap who firmly stood by his beliefs and at least he had the courage of his conviction.
To quote the BBC website,
“He resigned that position in the lead-up to the conflict in Iraq in protest over Tony Blair’s decision to go to war.
He had been an outspoken critic of the government’s foreign policy from the back benches”.

A great shame, he had much more to give.

The moral of the story might be that if you are a Labour MP of any real fibre don’t go walking in the Scottish Highlands (remember John Smith ? the best Labour Prime Minister this country never had).

Nice way to go though. With his lady on his arm, walking in the land he loved, and knowing he was right !

Rest well Robin Cook, you did your best and that all anyone can ask.

Phil.

And the BBC have devoted pretty much the whole evening news to the demise of Mr Cook- well, he was against ‘the war’ after all.

I think Britain lost a great politician and statesman. I admired his opposition and moral obligations on Bliar’s war plans.

Former Cabinet minister Robin Cook, 59, has died after collapsing while hill walking in north-west Scotland.

It is believed he was taken ill while walking with his wife Gaynor near the summit of Ben Stack, at around 1420 BST, Northern Constabulary said.

Mr Cook was flown by coastguard helicopter to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, where he was pronounced dead, said an NHS Highland spokesman.
