I am Yorkshire born and bred, as are all the tribe of family. We are very proud of our County and we welcome the development into Finningley as a passenger airport. However, when the name was announce we laughed and we laughed until we cried! My father is still laughing now!
Robin Hood is synonomous with Nottingham, everyone knows that. We are taught at school thet the ledgend of Robin Hood and his band of merry men lived in and around Sherwood Forest.
Doncaster while having some good points, somewhere, Im sure, doesnt have as much culture or heritage as some other northern towns, so what do the airport do, pinch a Midlands hero and call their no-frills bus stop airport Robin Hood Sheffield Doncaster International Airport! Quite a mouthful!
If I were in charge of tourism in Nottingham or at the Sherwood Forest Visitors Centre I would be hopping mad!
My only hope is that some ‘proper’ airlines come to Donny, as it will no doubt be know, and gives us a choice for those who dont want to fly no-frills!

Who’s this ‘Robin Hodd’ anyway, sounds like a bricklayer from Mansfield.
Just call it Scunthorpe International and be done with it…..and lets see what the Forum Auto Thought Police makes of Scunthorpe……blimey, it allowed it!

Apparently the other choice was the Lesley Garrett International Airport.

Oh? I thought the plan was to rename GLA “Billy Connolly International” in honour of an eminent local man?
No, wait……….. that was LAX, wasn’t it? 😉

Perhaps PIK should be renamed Glasgow-Prestwick-Elvis Presley International Airport in recognition of “The King’s” only brief visit to UK terra firma ?

The whole region was shocked when the announcement of the name came out. Our local news programme even went and asked the director why Robin Hood? He said “well apparently he visited Wakefield a couple of time” My ribs were killing me.

Well i see what you mean, it sounds like a airport name in a computer game like ‘Grand Theft Auto’ or somthin…
It seems hard to take it seriously but you know its different, maybe a lot of passangers would find it funny….. 😀
