Just got back from four days of total drunkeness, mud and still some fun at the Werchter festival. I had a great time – the Pixies gig was brilliant (never heard a Kim Deal-version of In Heaven before, T. Raumschmiere was too, the whine of Muse was bearable for at least one song, the talking-to-the-audience by Metallica was totally boring… but where was Geforce?
Was he the other guy on the campings shouting ‘HOEREN’ (=whores) every five minutes?
Was he part of the Belgian mob who sliced a Dutchman’s throat because the Dutchman started complaining about the noise (good job!)?
Was he one of the many people who got showered by beer every time i ordered a few beers over at least three rows of people (sorry, but i’m thirsty and ordering beer by eyeballing works best)?
Was he the guy who got a lapdance of the Sugababes?
Oh, and the festival ground is right under the landing pattern of Brussels-Melsbroek/Zaventem. Loads of BAe 146es or whatever they are called, a Transall yesterday, a Piaggo 180 on Friday, and loads of civilian stuff including an An-12 on Saturday.

Well, i think Kim looked pretty much OK for a junkie. Her smile to the audience could have helped a lot, i’m not sure about that. But her voice is still perfect to match Black Francis’ shouting. And yeah, the 20-something songs crammed into one hour was perfect, not the breaks or terrible BS between songs like most bands.
Didn’t like PJ Harvey actually, i thought most of her songs (the ones i didn’t recognise, so that would be the stuff she wrote since 1993 or so) sounded way too much like a stretched soundcheck combined with a little too much hysteria.
Yeah, i went to see Daan. Thought it was wonderful, i expected a lot more techno-like stuff (Swedish Designer Drugs and the lot), but most was actually very nice but oh so tacky guitar-stuff. Really enjoyed it.
Oh, and i was the guy in the brown Ford Sierra rallyecrossing between the tents at camping C3 this morning, and having a BBQ for breakfast every other days. There’s nothing as much fun as the look on the face of a dreadlocked vegan making his morning stroll to the Dixi-toilets, while he walks past your 11 am BBQ with bacon and sausages sizzling happily above the charcoal 🙂
And don’t worry, my accent isn’t quite as gutterally Dutch as you just wrote.

One more question on Pixies. Is this just a reunion-tour or is it really a come-back (and they can come back next year).
BTW did you notice how healthy they were looking. I thought Kim Deal would look like Ma Flodder, but she was just fine. They didn’t return on stage, instead, Charles Thompson chose to drink his beer on stage :p

I was the annoying kid with the black Pixies T-shirt trying to reach the first row. I hope you weren’t the Dutchmen who was upset because I was stabbing him in the back (really, I hate it when people are selfish during a concert). “Hey jaaj daar, wil je nou es effe opsodemieteren” was one of the phrases I experienced prior to the concert.
Pixies were great though! 20 Songs in just one hour. Especially My Veloria, Monkey Gone to heaven and Tame were performed excellent. My god, they are still number one.
Apart from Pixies, the festival was not as good as usual these days. Partially due the smell of people not having had a bad in days and plastic toilets.
Have you seen Daan, Arthur? Did you like it? yesterday, I had a discussion with two dutchmen about the Pixies. SOB’s also went to the A’dam concert. Merde, and then you are suprised if belgians try to keep the tickets for own use, even if that includes the use of deadly violence! :p Both were arrested today.
I did shout “Tettaa blooet” to PJ Harvey. That yellow dress and pink shoes just asked for it. Placebo was also a suprise to me, though I expected to see Brian Molko and Black Francis sing “Where’s my mind” together, luckily they didn’t! 😀
Anyway, I read in the newspaper that a Pixies-gig is planned (autumn) in Belgium. If I find out, I’ll let you know!
Now I’m going to take a shower, a good sh!t and shave myself.

Well I’ll be having my long weekend of mud, beer and Pixies this weekend at the former Balado Airfield near Kinross, Perthshire as the annual T in the Park festival kicks off. Last year’s event saw the beginning of a heatwave that lasted all summer, let’s hope for the same again this time.
Be sure to watch my efforts live on BBC-3 this Saturday and Sunday evenings. I’ll be the one on the left of the NME stage chucking a small TV camera around.
