Rolls Royce Gnome pics needed…

Does anyone have any good quality (high detail) photograph of a RR Gnome engine as fitted to a wessex? We are re-building an 1100 and are having difficulty placing a few small brackets and pipes, particularly around the IGV Actuator. The re-build manual sadly does not go into sufficient detail, and photos are the best way to go. The ones I’ve found on t’interweb are not clear enough or are of a different mark….

This is the correct mark, but a low def photo.. http://home.online.no/~eikarlse/wessex/image68.jpg

Thanks in advance

JT
Neal Davis has operated one in a tractor for about 20 years and used to work on them I think. He is very clued up and also helpful.
I can dig out his email if you want it, by PM

Cool, hope it works out 🙂 I used to hate wire locking those bolts on the plate in the exhaust, the bolts btw are silver plated I think and back in 76 were £3 each !

Third stage bearing support/stator vane assembly has been modified to produce thrust. Also reheat added. I am predicting 1000lbs+ thrust with the reheat. Fingers crossed.

I havent run it in the car yet. I will be making a wiring harness for it next month and run it maybe towards the end of February or early March.

Where are the Rotors? 😀

I never thought they chucked much wind out the exhaust, we used to do running refuels and the filler was by the exhaust so you would often cop an earful of hot air… Worst was doing a hover refuel, open line standing on the wheel hanging onto the strut, only once and only in an emergency.

Looks good, have you ran it yet? A lot of Gnomes were bought by the US tractor pulling fraternity.

I found two being advertised by a company called Turbines by Gateway back in 2007 whom I believe are located somewhere in California. Apparently one way or another they originally came from the Everettes. I was told that they were going to be used in jet boats. – a project that never made it.
I bought one and a friend bought the other. Both 1200s and both I believe from a Wessex.
I have modified mine quite a bit as you can see – probably a horrific sight to an ex Gnomey engineer? But for me it has been a wonderful project to get stuck into.

Gnome pics

Better late than never.
This is one of the Everettes Gnomes Imported back to the U.K from the U.S.
Now it lives happily in a Jet car.
Hope the pics show the detail that you need/needed.

Sorry but the Mk2 Wessex on 72Sqn had blue computers etc not black ones. If I can remember my image hosting ID I will put the photo’s up

I knew I shouldn’t have stuck my neck out 😀

I remember at Shawbury we operated Navy HU5’s. During the start of the Falklands campaign we worked 24/7 to change the blue computers/throttle actuators for ‘RAF’ black ones in order to provide the navy with spares. When we got Mk2’s from Germany ( 18 sqn ? ) they had black ones. Perhaps it was the other way round – memory banks and all that – it was thirty years ago

Anyway, back on topic, this is a remarkable achievement building this without proper instructions.

Here’s our beastie.. we just need to compare this to a complete example… I should also say that last week, this was a pile of unlabled bits… a 1000 piece 3D jigsaw puzzle with a fantastic description of what each big bit does, but not how they fit together. 3 students, 4 days. Fair effort I say….

Gnome 10101 was fitted to Whirlwinds, 11101 & 11201 were fitted to Wessex if my memory serves me right.

( RAF mk2’s had black ones IIRC and different computers).

1110-1 is the number and it looks exactly like a wessex fit – the notes it came with claim Wessex, and the painted marks on a couple of box covers claim wessex also.

Thanks so far, but I have seen those pictures and the only one of use was the Everett Aero one, BUT the bag get in the way. The Wiki one is the correct mark, but is not clear enough.

This one is definately Wessex from the oil tank mounted on the intake. The engines were left and right hand configurations. I would also stick my neck out and suggest it was from a mk5 navy Wessex due to the blue throttle actuator ( RAF mk2’s had black ones IIRC and different computers).

Sorry, I don’t have any photo’s to offer.

It was a 1200, 1100 was a Whirlies if memory serves me correctly… one here under engines might help.

Odd the link you show shows the bottom, because you can see the centrifugal fuel filter at the front

Remember if no engines are in you need the v strut in at least one side or the nose will sag and it is a bitch to get it back in place.

Forgive me but was it not the 1200 that was fitted to the premier vertical airborne pursuit ship?

I have some photo’s whilst we were carrying out an engine change on 72, I will scan them but I am sure they will not be in enough detail, however I think my course notes are in the garage. Can you send me some more details please?
