Rolls royce merlin

I have been looking for some photo’s or books on the rolls royce merlin with clear COLOUR photo’s not black/white as there not very good for detail.

I was speaking to the guy who runs the static display the one on the trailer he’s a very knowledgeable bloke and helpfull from cumbria i think.

I want to see the inner workings, dimensions, wet liner specs, torque settings heads, valves etc just like a workshop manual or what ever is available, is there any dvd’s where one is been stripped?

Is there any companies that let you watch or a tour of the engine workshop? i doubt it but i’ll ask.

Cheers pp

Doing a little more research found merlin pete = peter grieve his web site is v good he even goes to museums to help them to get going a static merlin! what a guy.

Lots of pics and found some others last night also thanks to the guy who mentioned e bay some there too.

Ah yes saint Peter of the Merlin, he may be able to help you with manuals, but there aren’t too many torque settings, as they like to do things with a dial gauge, measuring the stretch of the bolt; and a useful section in one, on repairing your Merlin from bullet wounds!

Seeing it takes about 2000 hours these days to overhaul a Merlin to Airworthy condition your going to need a looooong DVD to record it.There is a lot of stuff online, manuals etc and lots of merlins in museums etc.Best bet is to get onto one of the specialised V12 repair shops around the world, open a dialogue and see where you go.It will be hard as a lot of shops involved are touchy about their work being publisized. With 10,s of thousands of dollars being involved with an engine that goes into an airframe worth hundreds of thousands I would be touchy to.

You could try taking your own photographs. There are many sectioned instructional engines in museums so I’m sure you could find a Merlin somewhere that would be suitable.

The need to make new parts has been discussed even as far back as the 1980s in books I have.

New parts are being made, Vintage V12’s have some parts made & Jack Roush is making a lot of other parts.

According to duxford info on a merlin 168,000 were built and 55,000 were built in the states by packard under license.

Now if that is complete engines there will be spares too cylinder heads etc plenty of parts availble i guess.

I saw his dvd but never got back to buy one there only a tenner i’ll try e bay thanks.

The high numbers can be misleading, especially since the Merlin saw continued use after the war in service and in export aircraft. These spare parts would continue be consumed. What didn’t find its way to the scrapper in the 1950s and 1960s ended up consumed (and eventually destroyed) in hydroplane racing and other uses. There is a respectable amount of inventory remaining with engine restoration shops, but I would not describe it as a tremendous amount. The need to make new parts has been discussed even as far back as the 1980s in books I have.

Without knowing what particular version of the Merlin you are interested in, I know that at one time someone had digitized the P-51 manuals and the Merlin overhaul manuals onto CD for purchase.

It would be worth your time to search for scanned versions of Merlin overhaul manuals-or even reprints if they can be found.

Similar to this digitized Merlin overhaul manual on Ebay:

Coincidentally, I was talking to a chap the other day about Merlins. He used to work for a metals company and he told me that, just after the war, they were offered “a huge load of ex-Lancaster engines”. They didn’t really want them but were told that if they didn’t make a bid then they could forget about any further tenders. So, they bid, laughingly, Ā£10 per engine. The offer was accepted!!!
Oh for a time machine!

That will be Peter (Merlinpete). He has a DVD (available for purchase at his airshow displays, or on ebay) which shows several different engines running, and also some video time in the workshop. Manuals for various Merlin marks available from various sources, including ebay.

I doubt theres a DVD of one being stripped, as I don’t think the running time is long enough; maybe a boxed set….
