Romney buildings.

Does anyone know anything about these buildings , we have one and are looking at building another but this will have extra height and width by adding a section to the base and a section at the top. This makes it about 22 feet high and 46 feet wide . Much like Tangmere museums building containing their Lightning and Hunter. The main question is are there any snow loading calculations out there and design details. Or do we have to start again and get these done from scratch.

Nissens & Romneys are still manufactured in Holland by J Snoie BV
Also G T Evans in Wales
They are available in sizes from 16ft span upwards in any length.

A new build is the way to go – Ive done several now – the second hand ones are fine if youve got a free building and endless time – the originals can be prone to metal fatigue high winds and snow loads they can be prone to collapse. A New build kit will save you in the long run.
For larger Spans the Romney up to 36 ft Standard or 40ft with a roof plug are fine a much more robust building than the Nissen.
A 60ft by 24 is around £8000 Romney £12000
Add about the same on again for a proper concrete base.

Speak to these guys mate – we dealt with them for our Nissen extension (they do Romneys too) they are absolutely brilliant and very reasonable!

The Military Vehicle Museum have just erected one on the North East aircraft Museum Site in the last 6 months.

There are certainly calculations for the ring beam to support the hoops and I would imagine that the planning department at Sunderland would have wanted snow loading calculations.

You might be able to find details on the planning application or contact the museum on 091519 0662 and ask for John Stelling who was involved

Graham,

I believe that my comments in post #10 of this thread http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=81581 would also apply to Romney style buildings – sadly I’m not aware of any such ‘calculations’ in the local area! 🙁

Yes 😀 As I did the cladding on your 1st Romney…. I also know you don’t have the man power to do a build like this Again.. it’s not a job for anyone that has not got the right skills… Try and contact Tangmere Air Museum to see if they have any design details… Then raise the cash and get the contractors in Best all round…
