Round Four: Yeasterdays Navy

With all the defence cut backs happening globally (well for most countries), I thought it best to bring back a bit of national pride and what better way to do it than a trip down memory lane, where “the old navy” could have litterally taken you anywhere around the world!

So with a bit of inspiration here is round four, I’ll accept types and country of service only for this round, mainly because of the national pride I’m trying to bring back to everyone.

Good luck

P.S. As I said last round, I’ve gone back to only five due to bandwidth problems for those of us on dial-up services (yes that includes me), so if you guys answering could keep this in mind as well we’d all have a great time, thanks guys 😉

P.P.S Each pic has a specific number, thus I will help you out with the order for answering, they are listed as such:
1st row: Ship 4_3 and Ship 4_5
2nd Row: Ship 4_1, Ship 4_2 and Ship 4_4

What I was refering to mate was the fact that the defence cuts are hurting everyone, the Dutch most of all, the pollies seem to think that there is no longer any threat so they no longer need a defence force.

Now that one, I should have known. By the way, what do you mean HAD a proud fleet? Four LCF DDGs, six M-class FFGs, four Walrus class SSK, an LPD and a second one in the making, a pair of AORs, all world class home-designed and home-built ships, how can that not be a proud fleet?

:p

Ok everyone, here you are, the last ship is……….Big Drum Roll…………….

The Karel Doorman (R-81)
She was started as a Majestic Class carrier during the war but was finished after WWII. The Dutch bought her and had her for some time then sold her to the Argentinians who named her 25th of May (Vientencinco de Mayo).

The Dutch had a proud fleet once, just wanted to remimd everyone of that fact.

Wan, VV is a very nice ship and I too love her, I would love to sail the world in her. Yes she is very much like JdA.

Anyway sniffing around for answers won’t give you points mate, sorry 😛 I know it’s hard but this one is going to give the owners a much needed boost to their very lacking morale afterwards.

Well, I wasn’t all that far of: I initially was thinking Vittorio Veneto, which was a helicopter cruiser, not unlike Jeanne d’Arc :diablo: However, the anchor wasn’t right. Anyway it got me into Italian ships.

I think 4_4 is a post WW2 British attack carrier. Question is which one? Ark Royal (R09), Victorious (R38), Hermes (R12) or Eagle (R05)? Could also be one of the assault carriers: Bulwark (R08), Albion (R07), Centaur (R06). But UK and post WWII conversion.

Villian: mate you and I should get to gether and spin a few waries over the traditional two cans 😉 Send me a private message and we’ll see if we can’t catch up mate!

Oh yeah btw, you got it Ship 4_3 is infact Jeanne d’Arc, Wan’s kicking himself now!

One left and I think this is going to be the toughest, remember people Type and Country of service only, Name will help.

Hi Ja,
those lines are still so familiar. Served on HMAS Adroit in 1976 and a bit of ’77. Gee, I can still remember my survival at sea training in July 1971 off the old Castlemaine, that water was bloody cold.

And Bombard is still in service with the Indons as 859 Siribua.

And ship 4_3 would be Jeanne D’Arc I reckon!

Cheers………villian

Villan: Mate double merits to you, it’s actually HMAS Bombard (APB 99). I actually did my initial survival training on her sister HMAS Barricade (APB 98) which was tied up alongside HMAS Cerberus for many years, but I think she’s gone now as SAS (survival At Sea) is now done later during cat training and not during Recruit training (I was in the last class that had it).

1st row, 2nd photo – ship 4_5 : Australian Attack class patrol boat (class of 20 built in the late 1960’s).

Eight still in service with the Indonesian Navy, although operational status probably doubtful.

Cheers………….villian
