Hi everyone, long time no post! After 3 and a half months of heading round the World I finally arrived back at LHR this morning onboard 9V-SKB, SIA A380.
The A380 was excellent, the cabin is the best I’ve seen in any modern airliner. The seatback TV’s are huge and it is very surprisingly quiet in there. Not to mention that Singapore Airlines are amazing anyway, with their hot towels, food menu’s, metal cutlery, aftershave, mouthwash and shaving razors in the bathrooms, and the most professional crews I’ve ever met. I was sat in 36A, on the main deck towards the front of the ridiculously large wing. I had a wander in the flight up the stairs to see the economy cabin on the top deck. I was also very lucky and managed to get a cockpit visit on the ground at LHR, however photos are by ‘prior permission from the airline’ only and so I had to keep my camera hidden away.
Anyway, that’s the end of the trip and so those photos shall not be coming for a while. This is part 1 starting on March 17th when I departed LHR on Virgin Atlantic A340-600, G-VRED.

The very comfortable cabin.

A cold East Coast.

And the cockpit, the captain kindly switched on the cameras for me to see.

We then boarded our next Frontier flight, an A319 N929FR to Phoenix. Phoenix wasn’t really a destination for us, but was instead a way to kill a couple of days and catch up after a busy week in the East.
Crossing The Rockies. If you look closely you can see ‘Larry’ the Lynx on the winglet.

Same cabin as before.

We left a 3oC Chicago and arrived in a 38oC Phoenix. Bit of a shock!

And that’s it for the moment I’m afraid. I’ll upload part 2 asap, which will start with the Grand Canyon/Vegas etc.

We then had 3 hours at Denver, spent most the time having a little wander but then found a good little spot to catch planes on the taxiway. I only had about 10 minutes but it briefly summed up some of the domestic traffic.

‘Spike’ the Porcupine.

Thanks again everyone, greatly appreciated! Paul, yes the lens did survive and she served me very well, thanks! Unfortunately I’m struggling a bit at the moment…I fell ill before the flight home and have since been told that I need to be checked out for Malaria. Secondly I’ve caught conjunctivitis in one eye, so I’ve been trying to edit photos with one eye shut! Not fun, so have not really got round to doing much. Here are the next two flights though, from Chicago-Phoenix via Denver.
First is a nice old NWA DC-9 being pushed back at Midway.

Second is the aircraft that was going to fly us to Denver, Frontier A318 N806FR. Something I didn’t realise before is that Frontier actually focuses on the animal thing quite a lot. They all have names, this one was ‘Humphrey’ the Bison, and the animal is always introduced at the start of the flight, and has its own placard at the entrance of the plane.

Here we are departing Midway, the airport is constructed in a 1 mile block and therefore as soon as the wheels are up, you are practically skimming the houses below.

The cabin, as with most US lo-co’s they all have PTV’s.

And the cockpit. Note the stickers warning the pilots about a bridge….this indicates that the A318 can’t fit under the bridge at Denver airport.

Great to have you back Dan! Hope everything went well and looking forward to having a good old catch up soon.
Fantastic shots to start us all off with too! 😀

Michael, thanks very much for that shot! I knew that someone must be at Myrtle Avenue this morning, once I get round to looking at those shots I’ll see if I can see the people lined up. Yeah it was 50 minutes late, they had a problem with the catering on the upper deck. Was good for me though, because otherwise I wouldn’t have had much chance for photos seeing as the Sun rises just 1 hour before the supposed arrival time.
I hope you’re not disappointed when you see the lineup of people consisting of just me! 27R was in use for landings with just a couple of aircraft coming over to 27L.

Welcome home, from the trip we all want to make!:)
By: wannabe pilot - 29th June 2008 at 21:22
Thanks for the kind responses everyone, glad you enjoyed the shots. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to add the next couple of elgs…Phoenix, Las Vegas, and maybe Hawaii.
With regards to how much it cost…my RTW Star Alliance ticket was £1150, hotels/hostels totalled at around £800, £2000 spending money plus about another £500 on domestic flights. So all in all less than £5000, which isn’t half bad really! Also, the miles from all my Star Alliance flights have earnt me enough to become Silver Status with Bmi, which means I’ll get another holiday this year with the flights paid for.

In case you’re interested, here is your flight arriving this morning. I know it came in about 50 minutes late – 6.45am, 6.50am.. something like that. 🙂

A very cold and snowy Niagara Falls.

After several days we then flew on Southwest from Buffalo-Chicago Midway. Flight was on 737-700 N467WN.
Climbing out from Buffalo.

The cabin.

A quick look in the cockpit.

And the Sears Tower in Chicago, the tallest building in North America.

I’m afraid that’s about it for now, too tired! Having completed 36 flights it’s gonna take a long time to cover the whole trip, but I’ll do my best to keep uploading and I hope you liked this first bunch.
