Route question

I noticed something when I flew to SFO earlier this month.

I used to fly UA who operates 777 from CDG to SFO. Those usely fly over Scoland , Iceland and South of Greenland.

AF’s 340 flew much further North. On the way back , the 777 flies much further North than our AF’s 744.

Is it due the ETOPS operation?

Has a 4 engines more flexibility in his route choice?
Or it it a coincidence ?
