RR232 AIR-TO-AIRS from Mark12

Hi all,

Mark12 doesn’t post here any more but he sent me a few shots from a recent photo-shoot of Spitfire IX RR232 G-BRSF, as a guest of Richard Paver – there is a very nice article in the June issue Aeroplane publication published on 12 May.

Enjoy!

I seem to recall that some of this A/C was on the IOW for a while prior to it’s return to the Island to be rebuilt at AA; nice to see former forum member Steve Atkin (mkV) helping out with the paint work, both he and mk12 gone from the forum but neither are actually “late”.

Thanks to Mark12 for his stunning photos.

Steve’s focus upon impeccable historical accuracy appeals to me. We’ve all seen aircraft with bogus markings — some of which are certainly understandable, being the right of the owner to do what he or she wants with expensive toys. And I don’t think Steve wins all of his appeals with owners — but his track record and passion bend ears and give him clout that, as I understand, wins him more than a few victories.

Not that one, the one it was mentioned in the article on RR232.

I well remember that. Did they ever find anything else?

Would be nice to find a complete wing in a hedge someday. Is that a true story, or too good to be true?

Well, one turned up in Orkney the year before last…

Sorry it’s the Daily Fail but for anyone who may not know the story http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2270031/Businessman-spent-1m-restoring-Spitfire-scrapyard-10-years-ago-sees-fly-again.html

Completely agree, Daz. That factory scheme reminds me of Alex Henshaws memories in ‘Sigh for a Merlin’.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – I rather like that “factory fresh” colour scheme.

I see exactly what you mean TT – reminiscent of Charles E Brown’s work…

Super shots! Many thanks to the late lamented Mk.12 for sending them in. I particularly love the shot of it banking away from the camera over Freshwater. Something about the light quality reminds me of a wartime colour shot.

Thanks to Peter Sledge for saving her and making a complete project out of a scrappy fuselage.

Thanks Steve for that nice photograph.
IIRC RR232 was one of the first which was completely reskinned, not the fashion yet in those days.
Did it ever had cowlings before it was exported?

We had 232 with us at the RAN Historic Flight way back in the 80’s
It was still the Mark 9 Mark 14 mess in those days.
Excellent to see her back as she should be.

(The gangly idiot in the flight suit is a very young me)
