Rules is rules..

not sure if anyone else picked-up on this story..

seems a shame that the council can’t see sense and bend their own petty rules, especially in this year when public awareness of heroes such as Bob Doe has been raised…

Indeed Mike.

But the point is thems that make the rules (and whatever is said, these are guide lines in practice) can change ’em. If it was a UK Governmrent item, it’s be one level of pressure required. Here it’s a much lower, more local one. Crowborough councilors are probably thinking a bit more than Blair might on these things.

Showing council ‘a’ that they are out of step with councils ‘b’ ‘c’ and ‘z’ is an excellent means of applying pressure.

I distinctly remember a road in a local village in Gloucestershire being named after the resident doctor who was retiring, about 20 years ago now. He was very much still alive at the time.

I can sort of understand councillors being chary of naming something after a living person who then goes on to blot their copybook. I mean you’d look a bit dumb naming a Jeffrey Archer Way or something – but heck, Bob Doe is 85 years old and his record is impeccable. I think this – as Guzzineil first said – is a case of ‘rules is rules’ jobsworthism at its worst.

Keep the e-mails going to the council, they’re bound to flinch sometime!

I don’t see what their problem is. When you consider the debt of gratitude we owe these good people it shouldn’t matter whether he’s alive or dead (In terms of naming the road after him). It would be a nice touch to do it now whilst he’s still alive so that he could unveild the name board, though I feel he may turn down the offer as most of these guys are very modest about such things.

As a numberof his aerial antics took place above Kent, they could always rename Dover. 😮

I received the same email this morning. Apparently there are proposals to have a building or something else named after Mr Doe.

My Comment:

“Rules or Guidlines.
Come on Councillors – Honour the man now.

Remember that the only reason why you are now serving and you have your rules and/or guidlines is because of men like him keeping England (and the rest of us) safe from Nazi domination.

People have written so people can amend!”

Their Reply:

Mr McDonald, good morning, thankyou for your ‘e’ mail, attached is a message from Linda Butcher, Town Clerk on behalf of Crowborough Town Council

Crowborough Town Council acknowledges your e-mail and notes the comments contained. The attached document sets out the facts of the matter for your information.

Additionally, the Planning and Development committee has recommended to Council that something other than a road or development should be named after Wing Cmdr Doe.

STATEMENT OF FACT Re. STREET NAMING

1. Wealden District Council is the authority that undertakes street naming.

2. Crowborough Town Council is consulted regarding names suggested by developers and is invited to suggest names.

3. Currently there are no developments or streets in Crowborough without names.

4. Crowborough Town Council maintains a list of names for when a development or street requires naming.

5. A name is put forward to Wealden District Council and that Council makes the final decision.

POLICY : Internal Process for Crowborough Town Council

1. Anyone (or organisation) can suggest a name for consideration.

2. These names could be of people or anything relating directly to Crowborough, i.e. Lincoln and Welland Regiment, Montargis [twin town].

3. The person (organisation) submitting a name should include full details about the suggested name.

4. Each suggestion will be considered on merit and if approved, be added to the Council’s Approved List.

5. The Council will not include anyone on the Approved List who is still living.

6. When a development/road is identified, the Planning and Development committee will match the most appropriate name from the Approved List.

7. If considered appropriate by the Planning and Development Committee, the street name sign will include a plaque giving a brief resume of the person named.

8. The name will then be submitted to Wealden District Council.

Couldn’t resist forwarding bits of this string to Richard Littlejohn at The Sun.

Response within five minutes “Bloody typical. RL.”

Watch this space as they say!

Nice one, let’s hope it gets a bit of press then!

Cracking. Keep the foreigners like me posted on this. Do you think Crowborough DC would like an email from the USA as well?

So where does the obligatory ‘Nelson Mandela road/avenue/close/way/street fit into the ‘not until they are dead’ syndrome then 😀

Good point. Once a precedent is set, others should be able to follow follow. There are at least four “Nelson Mandela” named roads in the U.K. according to Streetmap.co.uk

I agree, it does seem sad and a big shame, polite but strong emails are better than nothing. Positive action always beats just moaning.

Good man!

Any more gonna rock the boat and fire off an email, or are we gonna just argue about what the BBMF should wear and whether a Canberra should join the flight? :dev2:

I sent a very strongly worded email to info@crowboroughtc.co.uk
No doubt they’ll just ignore it, but it’s worth a try!

I have done the same.
