There is a tweet of „Planebusiness“ with the information that „our sources“ can confirm that „Delta has a deal in place“ for the entire Boeing 717-fleet of AirTran/Southwest. This would be a highly interesting development.
Just a reminder: it is a rumour but this time it seems that there is the possibility that something´s going on behind the curtain.

Actually a wise move in terms of cost reduction…. As per Flightglobal the B717 is 22% more efficient that the DC9 they’ll replace….

Southwest agrees to sublease 88 Boeing 717s to Delta.
Here is the press-release from Delta´s Newsroom:

They are similarities and on the other hand differences but I think that the similarities would outweigh the latter. As far I as I know the Boeing 717 does not share the same type certificate. There are unconfirmed developments that Delta and the FAA are working for a common type-rating for pilots alongside a common modified cockpit for their MD-88s, MD-90s (and possibly Boeing 717s). The 717 should be no problem for flight attendants rated on MD-88s/-90s because (for example) the handling of doors are similar and there would be probably rather minor changes for such employees to fly all three versions. I’m sure they’d get a great deal on the lot…
A question…could they be integrated with Delta’s existing McDonDoug fleet?
I’d guess they’re on the same type certificate to help training, what about parts and spares?
