Runnymede Memorial

Hello everyone,

Probably a daft question, but here goes…

What happens when a missing RAF airman is recovered? Does his name get removed from the panels of the Runnymede Memorial, or does his name get marked (for example) “Found”?

I was looking at a website describing the recovery of a Halifax and its crew in Holland, (I think the aircraft was LV905), and it set me thinking!

Hope someone can assist.

Thanks in advance,

Jason

The names are not immediately removed from Runnymede and I know of many who have been there for years. The policy is that the names are removed as and when individual panels are replaced – presumably when they are renewed due to age/weathering. Somewhere I have letter with the official CWGC policy.

Certainly the Americans at Madingley remove the name from their wall if a casualty is identified.
