Russell Bf 109 for British tour in 2006?…

Taken from A***plane Monthly magasine—

Reports emanating from the USA suggest that there is an “80 per cent chance” that Ed Russell’s Messerschmitt Bf 109E, Werknr 3579, based near Niagara in Ontario, Canada, will be coming to Britain for the 2006 airshow season.

Didn’t Robs Buchon go to Charles Church and then on to Jim Cavanaugh in Dallas?

I also remember seeing a programme where “the Major” was comparing and contrasting the 109 with the Spitfire, albeit on the ground. His comments weren’t too favourable, I seem to remember.

Was it not a Channel 4 documentary on the Spit? I think I know the one you mean – ‘Black 6’ was in it, unpainted as I remember.

Indeed, Mark Hanna said that the flying characteristics are quite nice!

Mark
I must disagree the Bf109 is NOT a difficult aircraft to fly it’s the take off and landing thats the problem

And yes it would be nice to see a 109 display again

[QUOTE=Pete Truman]How many of the Buchons used in the BoB film have survived, I know that there is a stash in the US, are the remains of Mark Hanna’s kept somewhere and what happened to the one owned by Robs Lamplough, is this the one at Beighton. I bow to your superior knowledge.

Pete,
I’m led to believe that the remains of the former OFMC Buchon G-BOML were scrapped in Spain.

Yes I took the the pictures Mark was flying Black 2 as already mentioned. I believe Dave Southwood flew Black 6. PM631 and PZ865 were on the other side of the Lanc It was all arranged the week before the show I also have video footage somewhere of both Bf109’s taken from a minicam bolted to the flare chute ram on the Lanc.

I would be surprised if Ray Hanna was flying Black 6,maybe the other one possibly as i think that was being operated by OFMC at the time.

Fabulous piccies, did you take them? I had an idea that Ray Hanna was flying Black 6 that day, I do recall them flying a fast, close, low level display that day, I to have it all on video somewhere.
Was the other wing of the Lancaster host to 2 Spitfires or 1 Spit and a Hurri, I can’t remember.
At one point the 2 BF-109’s were used for a quite impressive strafing routine for a TV programme involving Martin Clunes as a nutty Group Captain, it was about the initial suspicious alliance between the USAAF and the RAF, a very funny black comedy, anyone remember this, it also starred Sally B and I think MH434, I don’t recall it being mentioned on this forum before.
I recall going to Duxford and seeing the 2 Messerschmitts being painted up in temporary colour schemes for the programm, can anyone comment on this.

It’s been mentioned a couple of times on here before. I have some scrounged photos of two of the Spits involved – MH434 and PL965.

The other three (all in ground-only shots) were:

AR501 (WO-L)
ML407 (WO-T)
TE566 (WO-P)

I think ‘Black 6’ was repainted, but not sure about D-FEHD.

The miniseries you are on about was “Over Here”

I enjoyed it too – the young RAF pilot was played by Sam West, who played the lead role in the BBC’s “Bomber” dramatisation.

i remember that formation coming over my house in corringham essex on its way to north weald and i spent half an hour arguing with my dad cos he thought they were mustangs!!! he refuses to acknowledge me to this day!!

As for all this nonsense about black 6, i thoroughly agree with Andy that it was a accident, in a difficult aircraft to fly, and that anybody who has the nerve to try and blame pilots, who dedicate the time and love for free, should really take a long hard look at themselves.

Anyway, it will be great to see the me 109 alongside the raco buchon if it comes over. As its already been said, BRING IT ON!!! 😀

However they diplay it, it’s pleasing to see another Axis type might be flying in this country. There’s only a handful already flying here (mostly non-comabt types) whilst other countries seem to be having 190s and 262s getting ready for display in the near future.
