It is indeed, but if you had the cash for a Spitfire, Hurricane, P51, P40, which would you buy?
Hurricane for me without a second thought.
And yes, I too would gladly see a BMMF Spit sold to finance a 3rd Hurri for the flight.

Thanks captainslow. Good to have chapter and verse and to find that my memory hasn’t completely gone!

I seem to recall it was said that one of the Hurricanes used in the Battle of Britain movie could never be properly trimmed out and was stodgy to fly as the result of a hurried rebuild. And didn’t Shuttleworth have a similar problem with the Sea Hurricane, which may have been due to the weight of the hook?
That Hurricane was the Canadian one that flew in the film with PZ865 and LF363, it had a cut down Catalina propeller and the ailerons had been built by eye as the rebuilder had no drawings, Vivian Bellamy mostly flew it for the film and found it flew very differently from the ones he had flown in the war. It was sold to the Strathallan Collection and rebuilt again with the problems ironed out, Hawker’s Duncan Simpson did the first and test flights. It was later sold to the Canadian Warplane Heritage but was sadly lost in the hangar fire 20 years ago-only the engine survived as it was away being overhauled.

True, so I supose they choose their own colour to put their own mark on it so to speak. It was back in the 90’s that I toured the BBMF, I won a VIP day out there, got to sit in all the crew positions in the Lancaster, bloody marvellous!! Anyway, at the time some of the fighter engine blocks were bright red and this was the reason given.

Grey is just as good as red or blue for spotting leaks!

Exactly, HP111. It is called ‘supply and demand’. This is the reason that they have been building brand-new Merlin Spitfires and P-51s for years, whilst the likes of Griffon Spitfires, Hurricanes and Tempests are comparitively unloved. Back to the subject of Hurricanes, we owe a huge debt of thanks to Hawker Restorations. 6 of the 12 currently-airworthy examples have come from their shop, and they are the only people doing Hurricanes in volume on a commercial basis. Without their input over the past 15 or more years, there would only be a handfull airworthy worldwide.

Going back to the engine block colours, isn’t it commonplace to paint them a bright colour to help spot oil leaks etc. I’m sure I was told this on a BBMF visit.

It is indeed, but if you had the cash for a Spitfire, Hurricane, P51, P40, which would you buy? The nicest to fly, or the most historical? Jaguar or Ferrari?
I think I might know the answer!
Bruce
A good question. There is no definite answer, but if I had more than enough money…
Since I am not an uber-enthusiast or an expert in such types and not (much of) an exhibitionist, I would probably go for something fairly commonplace (in case I broke it). On that basis it would have to be a P-51. Now let’s see – a nice bright colour scheme like the yellow I-BILL always impressed me. (Historic – what’s that got to do with it?)

I have to agree with the idea of BBMF getting a third Hurri, although it would be nice if they didn’t have to sell anything in order to get hold of it. It would take deep pockets and a huge dollop of generosity, but it would be great to see one donated to the Flight. BBMF displaying without a Hurricane, as they sometimes have to, just doesn’t seem right.
A bit of a long shot I know, but you never know who’s reading this. 😀
I would like to see Lottery Money purchase one for the Memorial Flight.

Hurricane every time for me! or a P-47.

It looks like the complaint is that the Hurricane is not as powerfull/fast/sexy/fashionable as the Spitfire/P51 etc. This seems to me a very consumerist view of airworthy warbirds. On that basis, for instance, all biplanes should have been scrapped long ago.

I’ve got a very good friend that flies a Hurricane on a fairly regular basis, along with a bunch of other WWII fighters. I gather that while he enjoys the Hurricane for what she is, she is his least favorite to fly. As a side note, he also says he would happily take the ME-109
into battle and loves to fly it.

There’s a large almost Lancaster shaped aircraft behind the Hurricane in the platinum advert, but it looks more like a model. Any ideas what it is?
Its a full size Lancaster(ish) mock up from the trailing edge forward that comes out of the wall . Entirely made of wood
Below it is a stage where Big Bands would play when Mr Russell held events in the hanger.
I attended a few black tie events there and it looked really great actually

Anyone know if Zeuschel gave his a color?
T J
Dave used red until some visitor from RR said “Back at the RR factory we paint our scrap red”. Then he started using black.
The Merlin in Tom Cruises P51 was painted Case Tractor Orange… (slightly darker than JCB Yellow)

That’s interesting, considering that they nearly all came out of the same shop.
That maybe the case, but I seem to recall John Romain saying a similar thing about Spitfire restorations in a FL video from a few years back.
Although not as ‘anti’ as many on here, I just tend to tune out his ramblings these days.
Me too.
I found this year, I was able to, as you say, ‘tune out’, but much more easily this than other years. Maybe it’s the fact that there were no speakers in close proximity to the front of the TFC enclosure! 😀
Cheers

I believe aircraft like the Peter Vacher example fly a little differently because of the amount of military equipment fitted such armour.
By: Mike J - 24th July 2013 at 00:08
And on that note, I thought I heard Mr Chabbert at this years Legends say that ex-Wallis example was deemed the nicest flying of all the current Hurricanes, by those that had flown other examples.
That’s interesting, considering that they nearly all came out of the same shop.
Actually, I think I’m more impressed by the fact that someone was actually listening to M.Chabbert. Although not as ‘anti’ as many on here, I just tend to tune out his ramblings these days.
