Russia asks for more US dollars to clean up nuclear mess

Just saw a headline item on the CBC referring to the fact that Russia has requested the US to supply funds (additional?)to assist in cleaning up nuclear material. Perhaps related to the rusting hulks of decommisioned subs?
Any one have any details?

Some more detail of this ongoing process can be found at:
www.defense-aerospase.com.

Everything from bombers to subs.

The funds are obviously allocated as needed through the budget process.

Funny how for the last decade or so, Americans are the only one footing the bills for this. Now, the EU submitted and i guess aproved a budget but IIRC no cash has given out yet on this issue, and it’s all of the sudden “We” this and that…

With the scale of the problem loosing a kilo of Nuclear material here and there is a reality in Russia today. Thats what West is worried about.. With Terrorisam in first view, no wonder they are. BUT i doubt the 10 or even 20bn will solve problems.. Firstly and knowing russian system and having delet with Russia buisiness wise.. i can tell u right now that 20-30% of those 10-20Bn will dissapear.. 30-40 will go elsewhere leaving 30-50% which will be used in very inneficient way.. Result.. One of those problems which u cant ignore but what ever u do it will not go away.

RE: Russia asks for more US dollars to clean up nuclear mess

Today one of the US networks had a short segment on this issue. In summary it claimed that the US has already funded $7 bil US and is being requested to contribute another $10 bil over then next 10 yrs, with a other nations contributing another $10 bil (over the same period presumably). As usual, geting clear details out of the press is a stretch at best.

Due to the shoddy methods used to handle and store this type of material in the days of the USSR and now Russia, it will be a miracle if there isn’t some sort of disaster waiting down the road. Apparently some of the billpayers are questioning the way the Russians keep track of the process.

That’s right. Their nuke sub base in Mourmansk (Baltic see) is a kind of dump. I’m afraid that we ( europe/USA) will have to pay to clean up this mess. They have dozen of phased out sub here because of a lack of maintenance.

This is from my point of view much more dangereous than the so-called hidden weapons of Saddam ….

“Didn`t the EU already paid more than enough to clean up that mess? At least that`s what we are paying for. (OK not me I`m a student/parasite )”

The nuclear “mess” is ongoing… nuclear fuel rods don’t last forever.
