Russian arms sales to Syria

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/16/world/europe/russia-sending-air-and-sea-defenses-to-syria.html

Mr. Isaykin, a powerful figure in Russia’s military industry, openly discussed the weapons being shipped to Syria: the Pantsyr-S1, a radar-guided missile and artillery system capable of hitting warplanes at altitudes well above those typically flown during bombing sorties, and up to 12 miles away; Buk-M2 antiaircraft missiles, capable of striking airplanes at even higher altitudes, up to 82,000 feet, and at longer ranges; and land-based Bastion antiship missiles that can fire at targets 180 miles from the coast.

Military analysts immediately questioned the effectiveness of the air defenses Russia has made available to nations in the Middle East, including Syria, none of which have offered even token resistance to Western forces.

Ruslan Aliyev, an authority on military affairs at the Center for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies in Moscow, said that statements by Mr. Isaykin and others were issued principally for political effect. Moscow has declined to supply Syria with its most lethal air defense, the S-300 long-range missile system.

Any thoughts?

Syrian army needs a lot of BMPTs in their assault units to support their tanks to fight effectively to gain ground and wipe out the well armed & funded Islamic scumbags.

When it gets real tight, TOS-1 would be the most useful stuff to flatten the area. It is going to have a good impact on the fighting spirit of the Islamic scumbags.

They need to equip their tanks with add-on urban warfare kits at the earliest. But the first they can do now to avoid sacrificing their tanks & crews to Islamic fighters is to take out all the free laying ammo out of the tank hull and carry only those permitted by the auto-loader. It would be much safer. The video of the Syrian army tank being attacked and blowing up reminds me of the bloody Chechan war. This is evolving/has already evolved to be the 3rd true urban combat where the opponents is well armed, funded and – internationally – supported Islamic terrorists unlike the dis-organized and unsupported elements we saw in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Russia needs to play an active role in eliminating these terrorists. When Lybian war was going on Syria was mentioned as the next stop, if they are not eliminated in Syria, their next stop will be cacasus!

Not sure if I understand. Are you questioning the military capabilities of Arab countries in general rather than the quality of Russian hardware in itself?

Hillary’s attack helicopter claim was pretty weak.

Mobile air defence cells are the way to go. Making use of a wide-area aerospace defence compex like the S-300 is probably beyond Syria’s capability anyway.

A different perspective from what I’m used to (politically speaking), but OK.

I’ll take it as a “keep your enemies closer” thing. 🙂

Due to a number of reasons I don’t think you should get your hopes up about that F-22, but let’s not ruin this thread with stuff like that. The forum is saturated with it already.

Thoughts? Well i hope they’re gonna shoot down an F-22 with them (SAMs), just for the hell of it.:) Unfortunately , i’m pretty sure a war in that part of the world is inevitable, UN sanctioned or not, justified or not. ( not trying to stir things or anything, just saying my say)
