I don’t know much about this so absolutely any information would be useful. Does the Russian Army operate an analogue of the American Humvee? What are the 4×4, soft skinned vehicles available on export etc. Generally and pics or information of Russian Army off-road, soft skinned vehicles including trucks etc would be most welcome. Thanks.

RE: Russian Army Off-Road 4x4s
Actually about a year ago there was a problem and I “lost” about 1,000 posts so it is even worse than it looks… }>
My excuse is that I have been here a while…

“But I’d imagine the armor on the BRDM-2s isn’t going to provide protection beyond a 7.62mm mg round.”
This is true… in fact the mine protection on the BRDM-2 is rather weak. Of course it is designed as a long range stand off anti tank vehicle or a light recon scout car. Neither roles involve mixing it with the enemy up close.
The Humvee seems to be being used as a light APC and for that role the Russians use the larger and better armoured BTR-80, BTR-80A and BTR-90 series (for wheeled use of course… for proper tracked infantry the US uses the Bradley, while the Russians use a BMP of some sort.)
The BTR series are well protected from mines and can still operate with 2-3 wheels blown off.

India I have no idea about.
China has recently deployed some indigenously developed 4×4 FAVs with its airborne army. still uses a copy of the UAZ jeep, and also has made a copy of the hummer.

What about other nations? In particular, the former WarPac ones. What do China and India operate in this role?

RE: Russian Army Off-Road 4x4s
Sorry to be picky Art but there is no such round as a 7.62mm Makarov.
There is a 9mm Makarov… as Makarov designed pistols.
Regarding the BRDM-2, I love it too. There are many different versions, though the image you showed is not eastern block standard.
The two major variants are a missile carrier which originally had 6 AT-3 missiles in a retractible roof mounting with further reloads in the hull, later replaced by a version that could use AT-4 or AT-5 missiles in a 5 round fully retractible launcher. The other variant uses the same turret as the BTR series with on 14.5mm HMG and a PKT MMG. There are also command, Chem warfare, and many other variants including one SAM variant equipped with SA-9 missiles.

RE: Russian Army Off-Road 4x4s
Are there any armed variants?
Only lightly armed ones, with a PK MG or something similar. Unlike the Americans who do like to experiment with unarmoured combat vehicles (the Humvee is hardly armoured – perhaps against a 7.62mm Makarov round- but comes with a whole plethora of weapon options) the Russians always preferred armoured cars for such tasks. The BRDM-2 is the choice for Soviet-style mobile ATGM or light SAMs, which is armoured. The BRDM is BTW a really cool thingy in itself: it’s 4×4 with centralised variable tyre pressure, and if the ground gets too soggy it can lower four extra wheels. If it gets still worse than that, it has a hydrojet for amphibian use. I would love to try one!
One the pic (from FAS) is one with a TOW launcher, for a nice cross-cultural mixture. It could be Egyptian or something like that.

RE: Russian Army Off-Road 4x4s
Arthur,
The UAZ 469 certainly looks rough and ready! Still, I’m not sure I’d chose to put it in the same class as the Humvee as it looks to be a lot less armoured and certainly smaller. Are there any armed variants?

Oh my gawwwd…
That thing is almost as hideous and pompous as that Lamborghini thing. Doesn’t one of the Gulf states use that gas-guzzling off-road formula 1 mobile-home-sized toothbrush-carrier?

RE: Russian Army Off-Road 4x4s
The Russians have a new 4×4 military vehicle: the GAZ-2975 “Tiger”. It was first presented at the IDEX international defence exhibition. Enough similar to the “Hummer” about the general layout, the “Tiger” has many of American also under the cowl: the engines are Cummins turbodiesel, six-cylinders, 180 or 215 hp (the more powerful version is capable of 150 km/h on the road, very good performance considering that the weight is 5000 kg). I guess that its not operational on Russian Army yet, but it has already been offered to some Middle Eastern countries (including Saudi Arabia) as well to some African nations which have some tradition in operation Russian hardware.

That UAZ is manufactured in China as hte BJ-212, although still in widepsread use, will probably be superceded by an indigenous design, similar to the 4×4 fav currently in use with the 15th airborne army.

RE: Russian Army Off-Road 4x4s
Basic Russian army utility vehicle is the UAZ 469 though. That’s the one which is in general service and you’ll see plentiful. I have never ever come across one of those space vehicles and in all seriousness i doubt something like that gets really populair in Russia.
The UAZ is extremely rugged, not too large to find it’s way through a European-width forest dirttrack (ANY car can outrun a Humvee, just take a road which is less than 8 metres wide }> Why else does the US only fight wars in deserts ever since they got that unpractical behemoth?) and extremely easy to maintain. The same chassis and engine is also used for the UAZ 4×4 minibus, which looks a bit ugly according to some (not to me!) but which is in fact even better in the terrain, because of it’s centrally placed engine.

And this is an ambulance version of the UAZ 452 bus (also in widespread Russian army service)

Cool stuff, thanks guys.
Also, are these vehicles deployed in any numbers in Chechnya? Any pics of that?

Here’s a nice site on the Russian answer to the Hummer.
The GAZ-3937 Vodnik Narrow-cab Utility 4×4; personally, it looks nicer and sleeker than the boxy Hummer.
