That is interesting… and odd.

He (Andrei) goes on to add…..

“It is well known that China’s strategy for developing its naval forces provides for the the establishment of its own carrier fleet.

According to previous press reports, as far back as 1999 the Shanghai-based shipyard launched China’s first aircraft carrier (Project 9935) with a displacement of approx 48,000 tonnes.

Although it is widely believed that China is unlikely to commission its first aircraft carrier before 2010-2012, the fact that it has bought three decommissioned aircraft-carrying cruisers from Russia and Ukraine (the Kiev, Minsk and Varyag) shows that the Chinese are serious”.

“Some experts say that another issue likely to arise during the next round of negotiations might be the acquisition of Su-33 carrier-based fighters.”

Apparently the deal is for 6 new Su-27KUBs and an upgrade for some of the 24 Su-27Ks (Su-33) giving the Russian navy an aicraft carrier wing of 30 Flankers and 12(?) Frogfoots.

What is the plural of Frogfoot ?? – Frogfeet ??? 🙂

Andrei Fomin writes in this months AFM (in an article about delivery of 24 Su-30MK2’s to China)……

“Some experts say that another issue likely to arise during the next round of negotiations might be the acquisition of Su-33 carrier-based fighters.”

Why don’t they upgrade the so few Su-33s and Frogfoots on board, especially the Su-33s, it could give RuAN a small but very lethal force of multirole Flankers onboard.

so hope finally this come to life

Ken,

Ur earlier link to Russian carriers is not working, can u provide the new link if u’ve changed it?

If you have it bookmarked, then it has probably changed. The link from my Su-27K still works to the carrier page – at least it does for me.

If it still doesn’t work, please let me know.

Anyway, the carrier page is at :- http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/flankers_pages/russian_carriers.html

Ken

PS – The Su-27K page is at :- http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/flankers_pages/su-27k.htm

hmm, did they ever have 24 of these built? I supposed they only had like 4 Su-25UTGs. Anyone has the total number of these craft built?

Stop getting me excited !!! 😡

No… lol

I got this link from a Russian who has been talking about this order for 10-20 (can’t remember exactly) Su-27KUBs for a long time now. This is apparently the first of the lot. I’ll let you know if I find a more thorough article.

More Flankers (Su-27KUB) are now being delivered to the Russian navy.

I’m sorry….. I have read the link three times now – and nowhere does it say that ‘More Flankers’ are being delivered.

What it does say is that the sole prototype Su-27KUB will be practicing takeoffs and landings (which it has done before from Kuznetsov!!!) – ‘in real conditions’ (whatever that means) ??

Stop getting me excited !!! 😡

Yes for 2017 I heard. Yet a month later, Kuroyedov denied every report on that and said they would be going for littoral warfare, new frigates and corvettes. Now he’s saying again a carrier after 2010? I’d say kick that man’s butt. What a policy they have, changing every two weeks..

The Russian Navy is planning a new aircraft carrier after 2010.

Neither Varyag nor Kuznetsov are nuclear-powered, only Ul’yanovsk.
