Russian Frigate to go to India

ST.PETERSBURG, JUNE 15. /FROM RIA NOVOSTI NORTH-WEST CORRESPONDENT SVETLANA CHIKIROVA/ — The Talvar frigate, built by the Baltiiski Factory in St.Petersburg, has passed the acceptance tests, said the Baltiiski Factory on Sunday.

The acceptance tests, involving the frigate’s weapons systems, were held in the Baltic sea and were attended by the crew of the Indian navy.

The Talvar is the head ship of three vessels under the No. 11356 project. On May 8 the Trishul frigate, second in the series, passed the fire tests. The third, Tabar, is now undergoing factory running testing.

The Talvar is designed for waging hostilities against surface ships and submarines in sea and ocean regions, as well for repelling attacks from the air independently and as an escort ship in a naval force.

Its length is 124.8 meters, width 15.2 meters, water displacement 4,035 tonnes, speed up to 30 knots. The frigate features two novel armament systems and a state-of-the-art data-control system.

Its armaments include the antiship missile system Club-N with 8 self-homing missiles, artillery system A-190E, multichannel antiaircraft mid-range missile system Shtil-1, shipborne antiaircraft rocket artillery system Kashtan, 8 portable antiaircraft missile systems Igla, 2 torpedo launchers, one 12-barrel reaction-type bomb-thrower. In addition, the frigate can carry one Ka-28 or Ka-31 shipborne helicopter.

The interstate contract for the building and delivery of three frigates for the Indian navy was signed on November 17, 1997.
