The crash killed one of 13 people who were in the Russian Mi-14 helicopter. It was participating in joint rescue operations with Japan in the Sea of Okhotsk near Sakhalin Island.

The helicopter landed in the water and then tried to take off in rough seas.

It then tipped over and its rotors hit the water and disintegrated. The chopper then rolled over.

In addition to the death, three other passengers were injured.

The Russians and the Japanese were simulating an emergency response to an oil spill.
