Russian Mk IX Spitfire (Hangar 11 ) first post-restoration flight

Peter Teichman has at last got PT879 (personal plate ?  ) back in the air after a lengthy restoration process.

”So starts a new chapter in the life of this unique Mk IX Spitfire, which it was my dream to restore to the skies, I always said that was my legacy, my promise and today it came to pass. I am emotionally drained, excuse my brevity but it’s been a hell of a day. PT879 will now complete her test schedule and then will be granted her Permit to Fly. At which point, yours truly gets to fly her!

I feel deeply indebted and thankful to a special few of the many people involved in this wonderful project. Peter Monk of course, who was ultimately responsible for saving PT879 & the whole brilliant and talented team at BHHH. Steve Atkin our historian who has ensured that she is presented today as she flew on her last mission in 1945, along with my whole team at Hangar 11. And of course my friends, my lovely and sweet wife Karen and super family who have supported me throughout.”    Hangar 11 fb page. https://www.facebook.com/Hangar11Collection/

Darren Harbar has provided a number of photos, including this one. Hopefully he won’t mind it accompanying the news here.

Excellent work – now I know what colour to paint my Christmas project – this is a Spitfire radiator from Murmansk area that should arrive in 6 weeks to start a simpler restoration.

MK12 (once) of this forum posted this picture , observing as follows

”PT879 photographed at Airframe Assemblies on I.O.W. on 17 March 1998.

By my judgement of the leading edges, I would say it impacted snow or very soft ground inverted at about 10 degrees to the horizontal.

Mark”

I wonder if they tried applying a high pressure air-line, to return it back to  3D shape.

In the scheme of things, that wreckage represents a very substantial start for a rebuild.

I remember the piccy in Flypast back in the ’90s – IKEA couldn’t have packed it flatter!

Congratulations PT and the crew, I did see this wreck before the restoration, and it was very flat! from the impact, I also had pointed out parts that would possibly be incorporated into the flying aircraft.

A welcome colour scheme . look forward to seeing her in the flesh.
