Russian Museums

Going on a business trip to former the Soviet Union next week. Going to have some down time so I’m planning to find museums/aircraft exhibits if possible. The State Avaition Museum in Kiev is booked in but no time off in Moscow, so no visit to Monino unfortunately. I have half days free in St Petersburg and Ekaterinburg and have trawled the net but can’t find anything aviation related in either cities, anyone here have access to any other info? I thought there would be something in Ekaterinburg as I believe the VVS test pilot school used to be there.

Also, at the Koltsovo airport, there is a replica of the first Russian rocket powered airplane, the BI-1, mounted on a plinth. This airplane made its first flight from the same airport in 1941.

…and is mounted a little too high for for my lo-res snapper to get a good close up unfortunately but you get the idea.

I used to dispatch and one of the places I went to was the airfield near Chester where GMP fly their helicopter from. There was at least one MIG, and maybe two, parked up there. That was 5 years ago and I dont know if it/they are still there. From memory the engines had been run but the plane/s hadnt been flown since its/their arrival

We were having a bit of a chat about that a while ago-

A bit of a sorry tale by the sounds of it unfortunately.

A couple of years ago I paid a quick visit to Ekaterinburg, and was able to catch a glimpse of a Yak-18 or -52 or something similar on top of a restaurant in the city center.

You must mean this one. It is mounted pretty far back from the roof edge so it is difficult to get a close shot. Foliage on one side and a building site on the other prevents a side shot too…

You’ll have to invest in Bob Ogden’s new book “Aviation Museums and Collections of Mainland Europe” (Air Britain £28.00 to non-members)

Ekaterineburg has a restored Hurricane IIc (‘BM959’) on a plinth at the Revda Museum.

St. Petersburg has five locations plus another two nearby
Artic and Antartic Museum – Shavrov Sh-2
Civil Aviation Museum – Il-14, MiG-31 and Yak-18A
Naval Museum – Polikarpov I-16
S.P.A.R.C. Aircraft Factory Museum – Mil Mi-4A
St. P military Aviation Technical College Memorial Museum – Il-2m3

Pushkin Airfield Museum – 17 aircraft (mainly modern) listed
Road of Life Museum (Osinovets) – Lisunov Li-2

Many of the locations are “prior permission only”

Hope this helps – let’s see the pics when you get back.

Roger Smith.

On a visit to St P in 2003 I photographed the I-16 inside the Naval Museum – fairly boring just hanging down from the ceiling.

We went to SPARC – but it is a private company, not open to the general public, I photographed the Mi-4 there.

From SPARC, we drove round the corner and photographed a MiG-31 on display outside a building. I assume that is what is meant by the Civil Aviation Museum ???

I didn’t see any other aircraft arround – though that is not to say there weren’t any.

From what others have said, there are only parts of the Shavrov – I haven’t seen it.

We drove around Pushkin airfield – and saw a few aircraft that were being gathered together for a proposed museum – I assume this is the one mentioned ??

The Yak-28 is from there.

Finally, there is a Mig-21SMT ‘on a pole’ at Gatchina – a few km from Pushkin – where there is also an aero engine museum at the former ARZ218 site :- http://www.gorod.gatchina.biz/arz218

Pushkin Airfield Museum – again info from Bob Ogden’s book
St. Petersburg Regional Centre of Aviation Fans, Glinka Street, Pushkin, 189620 St. Petersburg. Tel: 0812-470-7226. PPO. Location: about 3Km south of the town which is about 15 Km south of St. P

Sorry Finny I was quoting from Bob’s book – funnily enough on the locator map at the start of the Russian section “Ekaterinburg” is shown as “Yekaterinburg”

Will try and remember to mention this to Bob next time talk to him.

FYI Revda is nowhere near Ekaterinburg, it is located in the Murmansk area on the Kola peninsula, while Ekaterinburg lies just east of the Urals.

I first visited Ekaterinburg over 10 years ago, and then there was a military museum in the center of the city, with a small outdoor display of the usual Sukhois, MiGs and Mils. Just enquire locally, I’m sure your hotel reception can point you in the right direction. Also, at the Koltsovo airport, there is a replica of the first Russian rocket powered airplane, the BI-1, mounted on a plinth. This airplane made its first flight from the same airport in 1941.

Thanks Roger, that is a great help. I have searched and searched for the Pushkin Airfield Museum online and have only come up with the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art and some references to a literary museum, does the book have an address?

I will of course get loads of pics but I’m not too great a photographer so please don’t be too critical!

I am in two minds wether to visit the Mig 31 or not…I have been wanting to get close to a Mig 25 as I have found the aircraft fascinating for a while now and I have got very excited about the one in Kiev. Its odd but I do not want to take the wind out of my own sails by seeing the 31 first. Is that a bit daft? Surely I can’t go all that way and not bother dropping by? Help…
