Russian Navy Status

Hey guys, first post here, these look like good forums 🙂

anyway, information on the internet is pretty jumbled up about the real status of the russian navy (cause no one really knows it anyway…)

but.. according to “latest reliable info” which classes currently serve in the north/pacific/baltic (main i think) fleets for Russia?? and how many of them are there in each class (in service/in storage for future service) … lets have your opinions/facts

Kuznetsov Class Carrier (1 in service.)
Kirov Battle Cruisers (1-3 in service, 1 in long term storage? (what IS long term storage?),
Slava Cruisers (1-3 in service? upgraded?),
Sovremenny Destroyers (8 operation, several upgraded, one of new “II class”),
Udaloy Destroyers (8 in service? ugraded?),
Neustrashimiy Frigates (2 in service?)
Krivak Frigates (8 in service? used for rust collection?)

and plenty of smaller ships (though well armed)

and subs?

Boreys?
Typhoons?
Delta III/IVs?

Severodinsk?
Akula I/I+/II?
Victor III?
Oscar II ?
Sierra II?

Well US won’t attack anyway, so that isn’t the big problem. For China, the fleet is still sufficient to keep them off, and I’m quite sure no one wants to attack a country with SSBNs, no matter in what state those are. The Delta IIIs can even launch from alongside, while surfaced, so they don’t even have to sail to be dangerous.
The Sierras are in the Northern Fleet (I think at Bolshaya Lopatka base with the Akulas and Deltas of the Northern Fleet). Although it should be said that the Sierras aren’t deployed anymore and are quite rotting away at thier piers.

Pacific’s subs are a little less exercised than Northern Fleet ones. Although they probably have much less resources and units.
The Kilo looked quite ok, although that was of course their best unit deployed to Yokosuka.

Well my concern is those remaining “undeployed” Sovremennys and the status of the Delta III, Akula, Oscar II submarines..hopefully that Kirov will be repaired soon (I bet Putin will make a big thing out of it..)

oh, and is which sub is supposed to replace the Kursk? Belgorod right? Or did they get rid of that idea?

also where are the Sierra I,II subs deployed?
Any in the pacific fleet.. and how capable are the subs considered (in general and as of now)

btw severo.. where r u from? and where do u live.. just curious

It’s not in such a bad shape…
The Udaloys had some deployments with Varyag, same with the missile boats. There was a US-British-Russian exercise in the Peter the Great Bay this year. I think it was Vinogradov (Udaloy class) who participated in that exercise together with a Tarantul III and some ASW planes.
There was of course also the Deployment to Yokosuka in Japan, in which a Kilo, Nanuchka III and Varyag participated. And some deployment to China with Varyag and Admiral Panteleyev (I think that was in 2003, not sure). Anyway, in the last years they have done at least some sailing and exercises and I was surprised and glad to see that it’s not always Varyag with Panteleyev who made the deployments, but that also some other units were involved. Everyone his turn I suppose…

Well the Pacific Fleet as of now is a crappy shape isn’t it? I’d assume if the Americans came by in a bad mood that the only way they’d survive is if they got up every possible Backfire-C at Alekseyevka..

“active” or reserve. Well, from a Russian Navy source: What we don’t use in the exercises, but in “active” service, can be seen as scrap. Some of those ships might be salvageable if the money is free, some are beyond repair.
I think at the moment one or two Sovremennys are under repair, but I don’t know what fleet they belong to (Northern or Pacific, other fleets are unlikely of course) up till now.

Stupid me, she is of course in the Pacific Fleet, I’ve known it all the time. Nakhimov’s under repair in the Severnaya (Northern) wharf, together with a Udaloy.

FAS is overloaded with errors. Go find the EF-2000 and MFI nose section they have on the J-10 page

Well, FAS is probably the wrong one… Happens more than once! I’ll check some other sources though.

Lazarev is North.

Admiral Lazarev SY 189 NOR 07/27/1978 05/26/81 10/31/1984 (ex-Frunze)
1990 laid up at Severomorsk
inactive from mid-1990s
to be scrapped

It seems to be Lazarev in Pacific fleet.

ex-Frunze; decommissioned Jun 99. May be recommissioned for Pacific Fleet if funds can be found. Currently maintained in reserve in Strelok Bay. Suffered damage in a fire that broke out in Dec. 2002.
That’s what I found…

Yeah, I know, the photobucket has exceeded bandwith, but normally you can still see the pic on the photobucket site itself, I’ll have to figure out how to link to that part…
Nakhimov is under repair now. (For three years now, but in the beginning of 2004, the yards received full funding for the repair, so I suppose she should be ready in a couple of months or at least next year, depending on her state of course).
Lazarev is the second of class and is not active. She’s in reserve for some time now and probably won’t return. There are some pics of these ships, but only old ones. Most notable, Nakhimov can be seen behind SSV33 in Vladivostok, since SSV33 Kapusta is in reserve, I think it’s a “reserve port” and hence Nakhimov was there in reserve too. Now she’s being repaired, don’t know why though… I hope she receives the Kinzhal upgrade too.

Finally succeeded in uploading this one:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/Severodvinsk/RussianFleetsq.jpg
The large surface vessels of the Pacific Fleet. As you can see, Burniy is the only active Sovremenny in that fleet. Next to it are four Udaloy destroyers, Admiral Tributs, Admiral Panteleyev, Marshal Shaposhnikov and Admiral Vinogradov (in no particular order) and of course Varyag (Slava class cruiser) in the back.
