A very interesting photo, not only does it show a large proportion of the Baltic Fleets combat strength, but a good study of the Stereguschy next to other ships.

Russia would take it if Ukraine gave it up for a nominal fee.
They should have done that, in exchange for help maintaining their fleet (who do you think repairs Ukrainian ships @ Sevastopol?) or something else realistic and useful, not an absurd price-tag as if the ship is made of Gold.

Even then a serious overhaul and modernization would be needed, and might not be worthwhile.
Great ship, but outdated.

Well, I wouldn’t say that we have seen the end of the story. Based of what I have read in recent years I think there is interest from Russia but obviously they are not going to pay nowhere near what Ukraine is asking.

The ship would probably need a major overhaul and a modernization. I don’t really see the point.

Russian Navy Chief Attends Mistral Lay-Down Ceremony in France

MOSCOW, February 1 (RIA Novosti) – The Commander of the Russian Navy, Admiral Viktor Chirkov, will attend an official keel laying ceremony on Friday for the first Mistral-class amphibious assault ship being built at a French shipyard for Russia.

Construction of the warship, named Vladivostok, began last year at the STX shipyard in St. Nazaire, after Russia made an advance payment as part of the 1.2-billion euro deal for two French-built Mistral vessels, which was signed in June 2011.

The ceremony on Friday involves the placement of the first bow section into a dry dock. The Russian Embassy in France has confirmed the event is taking place but said it would be off-limits to the press.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, a high-ranking source in Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) told RIA Novosti that Russia had built 30 small sections for the stern of the ship. They will be sent to France in the near future.

The Vladivostok is due for delivery in 2014, while the second Mistral for Russia, the Sevastopol, is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy in 2015.

Meanwhile, Russia has put back plans to build two additional Mistral class ships under French license to 2016, citing the need to assess the ships’ performance, role and status as part of the Russian Navy.

The Mistral deal came under fire from senior Russian officials last month, following the dismissal of former Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov late last year, who actively lobbied for their purchase.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who has responsibility for the arms industry, said the ships were unsuitable for Russia as they were incapable of operating in cold weather conditions, while the Military-Industrial Commission’s Deputy Head Ivan Kharchenko said the Mistral deal was “absurd,” as it had inflicted harm on the Russian shipbuilding industry.

A Mistral-class ship is capable of carrying 16 helicopters, four landing vessels, 70 armored vehicles, and 450 troops.

The French-built ships are expected to be assigned to Russia’s Pacific Fleet.

Russia isn’t buying it, end of story.

Well, I wouldn’t say that we have seen the end of the story. Based of what I have read in recent years I think there is interest from Russia but obviously they are not going to pay nowhere near what Ukraine is asking.

Anyway, 1st Mistral was officially laid down today.

The first Mistral class amphibious assault ship for Russia will be laid down on February, 1st in a French shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, an official from United Shipbuilding Corporation said. “Official keel-laying ceremony will be held on February, 1st in Saint-Nazaire. First bow assembly will be placed into dry dock, where the ship will be constructed”

Russia isn’t buying it, end of story.

Ship is not “almost finished” and would require major re-work.

Much better to lay down extra 22350s.

Previously reported that the price of an unfinished missile cruiser “Ukraine” Project 1164 can range from $ 1 to $ 4 billion, as is well known, in 2008, Ukraine’s defense minister at the time, Yuri Yekhanurov priced cruiser at $ 1.041 billion, but the Russian side called the price ” sky-high. “
http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?act=url&depth=1&hl=en&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://flot.com/news/navy/%3FELEMENT_ID%3D136433&usg=ALkJrhgQzTzqTVh7-ouas4qu2uRN7aT8lg

It seems that Russia might still be interested in taking that cruiser but the price tag is insane. $ 1.041 billion? Seriously?

Well, if all water is frozen, I suppose an amphibious landing would be impeded and so a dock ship would ´not work´. But not due to any technical or design or construction falw imho. Silly arguments.

French Warship for Russia ‘Won’t Work in Cold’ – Minister

MOSCOW, January 26 (RIA Novosti) – Two amphibious assault ships bought for the Russian Navy from France in a 1.2 billion euro deal will not be able to operate in temperatures below seven degrees centigrade, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin admitted on Saturday, in critical comments about the contract.
“It’s very odd that ships for offloading a landing force, floating in our latitudes won’t work in temperatures below seven degrees,” said Rogozin, who has special responsibilities for the defense industry, in a meeting of the Academy of Military Science on Saturday.
“Maybe they thought we’re going to undertake special operations in Africa but I doubt that’s going to happen,” he added. He did not elaborate on why the ships would not work in cool temperatures. It was also unclear whether he meant plus seven degrees or minus seven, as Russian-speakers often leave out the word for minus when they assume it is clear which side of freezing they are talking about.
Russia signed the 1.2 billion euro deal in June 2011 for two of the Mistral ships, which will carry helicopters to support landings by marines. The first of the ships is due for delivery in 2014.
Rogozin was appointed to his current post only in December 2011.
The first Mistral is due to be deployed in Russia’s Pacific Fleet, based in the port of Vladivostok, which is ice-free all year round but still experiences months of severe winter cold. The second is due to be deployed with the Northern Fleet, which also has ice-free bases, due to the Gulf Stream, but also experience very cold temperatures for several months a year.
It is the second time this week that the Mistral deal has come under fire from a senior defense official. On Thursday, Military-Industrial Commission Deputy Head Ivan Kharchenko described the deal to buy the ships as “absurd,” saying the deal had inflicted harm on the Russian shipbuilding industry.
Updated with second part of Rogozin quote about operations in Africa, and explanation of his use of the term “seven degrees.”

Interesting updates from Zvezdochka- they have an order for overhaul and modernization of the entire “Bars” (971) fleet.

Now this we already knew, but they also got contract for work on the two titanium Baraccudas (945). Looks like these ships are here to stay.
This will require part of yard to be modernized and overhauled (work already started).

Ah ok.

Didn’t realize it went back into the slip…any info on modifications it is receiving right now? Also when is the next 885 going to be laid down, they need to hurry up if the 2020 plans are to be met.

With Monomakh launched, and Belgorod to becompleted, should be possible to increase concurrent construction numbers.

What is this almost complete submarine nearby? Probably Kazan…a much faster pace of construction than Boreiis if so.

As per kuleshov oleg (the guy who probably took this picture), its Severodvinsk, put in dry docks after the recent trials. They would be stupid to put Kazan right at the door for everybody to see anyway.

Vertical rudder is much shorter than on previous 955s.
