RUSSIAN NAVY TO ASSIGN PIONEER LONG-RANGE MISSILE BEFORE 2006

RUSSIAN NAVY TO ASSIGN PIONEER LONG-RANGE MISSILE BEFORE 2006

MOSCOW, November 29 (RIA Novosti) – The Bulava, a new naval intercontinental missile, will be assigned to the Russian Navy no later than 2006, Army General Alexei Moskovsky, Deputy Defence Minister, said to the media in Moscow.

Two missile-bearing nuclear-propelled submarines, the “Dmitry Donskoi” and the “Yuri Dolgoruki”, Projects 941 (Shark) and 955 (Boreas), respectively, will be assigned to the Navy next year-which means the Bulava assignment must follow, he said.

It will be a problem to commission the missile, acknowledged General Moskovsky: “That will be a big, all-round job, complete with a sequence of tests. It involves sophisticated industrial work.”

“2006 is a deadline to assign Bulavas, but we shall do all we can to finish the job in 2005,” he added.

The deputy minister highlighted excellent Bulava unification, far exceeding 50% to come close to 70%.

Though most Bulavas will go to the Navy, their units and gadgetry allow to put the missiles to the utmost use in the landed strategic nuclear forces, as well, stressed General Moskovsky.

12 missiles only? that’s kinda crap isn’t it? 🙁

You design strategic deterrent weapons to fit your requirements, not some external standard as to what is good/crap. Russia and the US signed the SORT agreement, which means by 2012 they have to have 1,700-2,200 warheads each, a significant reduction over what they have now. 12 Boreys with 12 tubes, each with MIRVs, makes up a sizeablle chunk of that warhead number. Factor in the land-based ICBM force, and the air force Tu-95MSM and Tu-160s, that’s your warheads right there.

Jane’s Missiles and Rockets has been cited by articles as stating that the Borey-class will carry 20 SLBMs. We don’t know, but either should be adequate.

Twin screws? Isn’t this a bad thing for noise-supressing? 😮

935 was the Borey designation before the re-design happened. It was re-designed when the Bark SLBM program was cancelled, 955 is the Bulava compatible version.

That drawing of the Borey is also horribly inaccurate, I don’t know who’s responsible for it.

The third picture is a US Naval Intelligence estimation, take it with a grain of salt. As you can see, the other two are of Russian origin, the second one being an actual model.
