Haven’t heard of anything new being discovered lately nor of any new projects coming out from there. Does anyone know any news, or has this avenue of rebuild material been exhausted . I’ll be interested in your replies, thanks.

If it is a rich Russian collector that knows what he is doing and has the means to preserve them and appreciate them, then that is better than nothing for the time being.

I am sure they appreciate your ‘approval’ – hopefully they can be trusted in the interim until someone more ‘worthy’ (in the West) can take over.
And it wasn’t the locals who stripped the StuG, it was the ‘authorities’

A Hurricane restorer told me of three he had seen recently in St Petersburg but the paperwork involved in getting export permits is now too costly and/or difficult to obtain through the correct channels that he gave up the idea of buying them.

If wealthy Russian collectors keep everything for themselves then they know how to keep a secret. The only recent recoveries I am aware of are the
Il-2 and a Yak 1 (or 3, forgot which one). There must be more out there. There were also rumours (probably are just that) that once the wrecks
had been sold the good airframes would be next.
Wishful thinking perhaps.

Not to mention that there are several very rich Russian collectors who are taking anything good that appears. The same is happening with armour as well.

I was dismayed to learn the fate of the fully intact Stug III that was pulled out of the muck and was said to have been stripped for scrap by the locals before the proper authorities could handle it properly. (Correct me if I’m wrong.)

I read somewhere a while back that when the government realised how much money they were loosing by letting the airframes go they shut the door. Not forgetting that Russia is yet again the worlds bad boy so that can’t be helping
