Russia's navy to hold joint exercises with Italy

Russia and Italy will conduct three days of joint naval exercises off the west coast of Italy in September, the chief of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet said Saturday.

The fleet is planning “serious joint exercises with the Italian navy in the Tyrrhenian Sea” beginning on September 4, Admiral Vladimir Masorin told President Vladimir Putin during a meeting in the southern resort town of Sochi.

Masorin said that Russian ships would sail to Italy’s port of Taranto before the start of the exercises that are due to last three days, Russian news agencies quoted him as saying.

After the exercises the Russian ships will stop off in Malta’s capital Valletta, RIA Novosti reported.
