Rusty radial

When I took the attached photo a few days ago, I thought to myself – I wonder how clever the forumites are and how long it will take them to come up with answers to:

– what is it?
– where is it?
– why is it there?

I don’t know the answer to the first question but the second and third I do. So it’s over to you clever so and sos now!

I can take a hint, Avion Ancien. Roland Garros, surely.

Still think it’s a Clerget.

Oooooooooooooh, I do have to be so unsubtle! Monument to Roland Garros at Cholet airfield commemorating, I think, his first flight there in 1910. I’ll double check the other brass plaques on the stone when next I am there and then I’ll post again. I’ll take your word regarding the what. I doubt that I could distinguish a Clerget from the clergy!

Stab in the dark , a REAL stab in the dark, Would this be a memorial to Bleriot where Bleriot flew his first aircraft ???
or something on those lines ??

If someone wins do they get to keep the engine, LOL 😀

Cholet 1973

Well done Rochford! Cholet’s the where. It may have been there in 1973. I think that it was probably there long before. It certainly was there last Monday. But it does not appear that there is yet a consensus as to the what and no-one has yet come up with an answer as to the who (despite the cryptic clue which I gave in my post of 23:11 yesterday). So get on with it. No slacking!

Memorial to a very long standing Historicic, But active airfield,????

,are we getting warmer ??

Not much! The memorial is on the airfield but it’s not to the airfield. It’s a memorial to someone rather than to somewhere. New balls please!

OK, so it looks as if the moderators will need to change the title of the thread to Rusty Rotary. But is there any consensus yet as to what it is? And where’s the input on the where and the why? C’mon, you can do better!

(1) memorial yes, war no
(2) you may dare and, in doing so, you would be right
(3) if you mean old in the sense of historic, you’re correct, but if it is in the sense of former, you’re very wrong because it’s still very active

Quite. Bentley had aluminium cylinders, and a Gnome had a single pushrod.

Clerget, it’s not a Bentley.

a memorial to a old airfield,
