Reading about the fatal accident John Denver had in his Rutan Model 61 Long-EZ N555JD in 1997. just brought me to thinking if any Rutan Model 61’s reached the UK and if they still exist in any form?

With hundreds of Long Ezes and Vari Ezes flying thousands of hours I think we can safely say it’s a good aeroplane. Perhaps their only weakness is that any grit on the runway can be picked up by the wheels and damage the propellor.

Close i think it was because the fuel selector had been moved to somewhere behind the pilot’s seat for some reason
The reason was a pretty good one.
According to an “Aftermath” article in FLYING magazine, the originnal builder wanted to keep fuel lines out of the cockpit, so he put the tank selector in back.
That’s not a bad safety idea if you know the system and don’t run out of fuel at low altitude.
Sadly, Denver had just bought the plane so wasn’t that familiar with it and ran out of fuel right after takeoff.

What! you mean the mole grips on the fuel selector were not standard?

Saw a Long EZ over Rutland Water on Saturday. Noisy little bleeder.

Just a reminder for those of you who don’t know… Denver’s aircraft was modified from standard and his accident doesn’t reflect on the design.

There would seem to have been about eight on the U.K. register.
Edit. Correction as there seem to be about 27 on the register. Not sure about the 61 number and whether this disqualifies any of them.
