Ryan PT22

Hi everybody,

My latest acquisition continues to delight at Old Warden. Several of the Shuttleworth pilots have had a go in it and all end up chuckling afterwards. I think its the engine – the Kinner sounds like nothing else around.

Its a cracking machine in beautiful condition and I am dead chuffed with it.

The PT22 has acquired a reputation over the years for being a pilot killer. As with all these old machines, there are some aspects of the design that will hurt you if you are careless.

Here is an interesting old magazine article that better explains the design brief and handling qualities:-

http://www.airbum.com/pireps/PirepPT-22.html

Whilst designed for a similar purpose, the PT22 has a much narrower envelope than the Maggie, cruising at a similar speed yet stalls at twice the speed and can only carry 2/3 the weight.

As with my Magister, nice to get the Breighton machine (the only other flier in the UK) alongside mine at some stage, especialy at a display.

I am in communication with the owner so unlike the Magister scenario (shame..) it could well happen.

Rumour has it that a certain magazine not entirely unconnected with this forum(!) is keen to do a feature.

HP

Ps.Come and claim your ride Damien B! A chivalrous Mrs Man on the Fence has had a ride already after the old man stepped aside for her (what were you after?!)

Saving Private Ryan??

Ryans seem to be pretty fluid in the UK. Their owners import them, then seem to get fed-up with them and they end up returning to the States…or in the case of G-BPUD, crashing! We’ve been fortunate to have about one or two in the UK since around 1980. Here are four I have photographed over the past 15 years or so….

HP’s G-BPUD seen from a Cessna 182 out of Badminton on 10th July 1990, prior to the Badminton Air Day.
N56028 also over Badminton the previous year, 10th July 1989 and finally
N56421 and N1344 on the ground at Wroughton 24 September 1989. N1344 was a regular Old Warden performer for several years throughout the ’80s.

TBM Avenger, the ultimate “party” warbird. Load up 5 or 6 mates in the back, and load all the lawn chairs and cases of beer in the bomb bay (just don’t open in flight).

Perfect lead in to a Mustang…

Ryan thread

Well, he did it anyway – and its got off to a cracking start!

Anybody who isn’t turned on by these top ‘bang for buck’ chuckle machines needs to go for a lie down.

Would I sell my spares machine (or should I say ‘ship’??) to an American?

Probably yes, especially if there was a trade involved. Somebody over there might have something really special – an STM for example? -and might want to px.

OK OK, I know the Menasco ain’t the ‘boat anchor of an engine’ that the 56 is but the STM sure is a pretty bird and my machines are looked after by the best engineers anywhere.

Dream on…. but then quite a few of them have come true already!!

Ryan Aeroplane’s.

I was going to start a thread on some of the Ryan plane’s Hairyplane 🙂 .

But I was not quiet sure of the reaction to it with all the heavy debate’s currently going on in different thread’s  .

I was quiet taken by the Ryan’s a few year’ back at a Point Cook display 😮 , I think there might have been as many as 6 or 7, some looking a little different then other’s.

Put up a very nice flying display, and was I not impressed with the flypast’s of all of them together 😎 .

Later when bored I wandered over and checked them all out 😮 , and took a few photo’s of the really nice looking polished job’s, they were really quiet beautiful aircraft 🙂 .

I have no scanner, and I think at last count I have still 6 roll’s of film not yet developed, from last Avalon Airshow, the 100 year show at Point Cook and a Flyin at Point cook as well 😮 .

There is hope but as a mate has a scanner, And was quiet impressed with what Mossie anorak sent me for Xmas.
He doe’s his family tree stuff in a similiar way on CD.

If I lean on him a bit, and he is not to busy, I will start to get 15 year’s plus of airshow’s on to CD, then on to here 😉 .

It was the MASH thing that got me thinking about the Ryan PT-22 again, there’s a few on that thread I put there.

If I start a full on Ryan aircraft thread 😀 , Will they fit alright in this forum’s Historic bit  .

Cheer’s all 😀 , Tally :dev2: Ho! Phil :diablo: .

We’re quite happy keeping these machines local to the UK and in particular in Warwickshire hands 😉

HP, how about selling the Robin, getting a Maule that can do touring AND stripping? Difference sort of fun but fun none the less. Skirt twitch factor?

Yeah predictable answer I know :p

Wotashame….

It brings a tear to your eye?!. But, looking on the brighter side, its only a machine. The skilful forced landing enabled pilot and pax to walk away from it.

It doesn’t look like that now. It has been carefully dismantled including a complete engine strip for preservation.

As can be seen, it can be restored to fly. There is excellent support for these aircraft from the USA. The International Ryan Club is also very active.

The 22 is a great flying machine that is unfortunately not well represented here. We only have mine and another (ex-Breighton) at Duxford in flying condition.

Bob Mitchel has 2 mouldering away in his Cosford ‘mausoleum’ (an apt decripton for a wet, horrible shed containing some rare/ rotting flying machines) but I think thats it.

Anybody know of others in the UK?

Anybody know the current whereabouts of G-BPUD’s owner at the time of its accident? I have some questions for him.

[QUOTE=Hairyplane]Secondly, if anybody out there has got a really interesting vintage flying machine in pristine condition and wants to swap it for a beautiful 15000 mile 89 Aston Zagato convertible ( one of only 35 built, list new was £183k!) – cash either way – I could be tempted to let that go too.

If its a Vintage Flying Machine you’re after HP, look no further.

Excellent coachwork, superb mechanicals and and a celebrity author on the log book, also knows its way to OW and DX without a map.

This is a rare opporturtunity to acquire MR Tweeds Ex Works homologation MGB GT.

I will happily take either the Zagato or the Ryan in PX against the beast.

In all honesty if anyone out there wants to help me free up a garage for the DB5 (Sorry HP, prefered Astons when they had the option of a Martin Baker recliner) please PM me.

Septic.

Steve, I do like that flying machine in your photo…Do the wings flap too?

Do the wings flap??? Of course the wings flap! Wouldn’t be much of a flying machine if the wings didn’t flap.

Really…some people 😉

Steve, I do like that flying machine in your photo – was it built by Fred Flintstone by any chance? Do the wings flap too?

I’ll take that flight any day HP! It’d make my year 🙂

Robin? A HAIR-y proposition! I’m not sure the good doctor Frank would want to get back into a DR400 group. Anyway we’re all happy with the Maule thanks.

Shame about having to lose the reg though 🙁

G-BPUD

Thats the one.

It was somewhat unusual in that the oft-discarded leg fairings and spats were fitted to it.

Such a pity tha what was once a pristine aircraft is now just a stack of parts, some quite bent….

Still – in those immortal words, ‘if you dont want it bent, don’t fly it.’

I would love to see it fly again and would let it all go for, well.. not a lot really…..

Great photo!

Is this G-BPUD, HP? Been scanning some old negs this evening, and I don’t think its your machine I’ve seen at Old Walden, or the ex Breighton example?

Photos taken at Finningley Airshow, 21 Sept 1991

(If it isn’t G-BPUD, any ideas on its correct ID?)

cheers

Zagato

Hi MotF!

Yes we can play with it – no problem. It goes like stinko. I’ll show you the sales invoice to prove that some lunatic paid £325k in cash for it from the Scottish Motor Show stand in 89. Hard to imagine that these cars changed hands for a whopping £600k (!) before the market collapsed.

Its worth a fraction of that now and could be yours for a lot less than you might think.

I can just see your name on the logbook?!

We can play with the DB5 too. That ain’t for sale though.

Planes, old cars – all fair weather machinery. I need something exciting to do in the Winter……

Lots of work under way with the vintage aircraft, all 3 will look terrific for the 05 season. Working on another smaller acquisition at the moment. If I told you what it was I’d have to kill you.

All the best mate.
