Ryanair base at Leeds/Bradford

Hi all.

Does anyone think Ryanair ( if successfull with its application) would be a threat to Jet2 ? I dont suppose it would matter so much if Ryanair flew on routes not operated by Jet2, but the worry for locals around LBA is that Jet2, which has helped to make what the LBA is today, may be bullied out of the airport. I hope I am wrong.
I dont think the LBA can sustain 2 large low cost airlines and parking would be a major problem.

Whats your thoughts folks ?

Regards
Nordjet415

Ryanair is reported to be looking at establishing a significant base at Leeds Bradford Airport. The Telegraph & Argus reports that this would include expanding the number of flights it runs from the Yorkshire hub to between ten and 20, subject to a deal with airport bosses.

Last month the company announced two new routes from Leeds Bradford to Spain, days after cutting back its winter schedule to Dublin. Ryanair said the additional flights were expected to bring an extra 100,000 people through the airport – counteracting the impact of its reduced Dublin services.

Ryanair’s chief executive Michael O’Leary said the company was in talks with the airport, but the move would depend on Leeds Bradford agreeing a low-cost deal. Tony Hallwood, the airport’s commercial and aviation development director said they were in talks with a wide number of or airlines, including Ryanair, about future operations.

I completely, 100% disagree. Jet2 as an airline do very little to impress me as a passenger. To call them low cost is laughable; they simply arn’t for the most part. Their aircraft are old and have seen far better days and I find many of the cabin crew have a patronising falseness about them which I frankly find extremely annoying. I used to like Jet2 4 years ago, but they’ve just gone massively downhill for me and are leagues behind the likes of Easyjet. In all truth, I much prefer flying Ryanair.

As for Jet2 having a good customer base, for the most part people use a service because it’s the most convenient way of getting from A to B. Jet2 don’t have any kind of loyalty scheme to reward their passengers, so why should people be loyal to them? If FR started a service to AMS I would very happily fly with them instead of LS. Ryanair’s aircraft are newer, more comfortable, and I generally prefer the cabin crew on Ryanair, despite the broken English.

Jet2 need a really good kick up the backside to bring them in line with other ‘low cost’ carriers, and I think Ryanair opening a base at LBA would do exactly that. They’ve been able to do what they like at LBA for far too long, and I think the passengers have suffered for that by paying far more than they would have to if LS weren’t the sole operators of many routes from LBA.

I sincerely hope Ryanair are successful in opening a base at LBA. Not only because it will give Jet2 something to think about, but also because another 100,000 passengers through my home airport can only be a good thing.

I have read a lot of the above, and the continuing arguments between LS and FR, and as a frequent traveller between LBC and LBA at weekends with LS over the last 3 months, I can only say that the flight has been on time only once, several times 2-3 hours late from LBC.(late incoming from LBA obviously)
Re an earlier thread of mine re withdrawal of LBA-LBC, I would say that punctuality was a reason for lower loads, also I dont ever remember seeing any advertising in Hamburg newspapers etc re Jet2.
I would only be too pleased if FR took up a path from a NE England airport to HAM backed up by their level of marketing. The HAM(LBC)-STN invaraibly has a high seat occupancy
LS has a lot to learn if it wants to stay in the LCC market

But any fuel surcharges / airport tax etc. ? I think that’s what people are getting at. There’s a great tendency for airlines to split ‘everything’ off the main package nowdays to hide the true cost of a flight.

Ryanair dont have fuel surcharges and they do have flights where there are no taxes to be paid. The full amount of money that came out my bank account for a return flight for two was four pence.

Paul,

I agree entirely, and your own comments are always well constructed, focused and balanced (much as with your photographs!), so no axe to grind with you.

However, I get depressed reading on this and similar forums, the anti Ryanair vitriol, unsubstantiated wild guesses at the financial status of airlines, Jet2 in particular, and the rather juvenile, uninformed, misspelt and badly punctuated posts that tend to predominate.

Sorry, rant over.
.

I understand your point entirely, but I suppose as long as a forum is open for all to comment these things will happen. As far as poor grammar is concerned, I shall try my best to not go on a rant of my own. A complete disregard for punctuation, spelling, etc, is one of my pet hates!

Thankyou for your little reference to my photography as well. Very much appreciated. 🙂

They haven’t confirmed anything else yet, no, but I don’t see a problem with having a bit of a debate about it. This is a ‘discussion’ forum, after all.

This is all becoming rather too much like a Sheffield football forum – Blades V Owls etc.

Have Ryanair actually confirmed anything for LBA as yet other than the Alicante and Gerona routes? If not, would it be better to reopen the debate if and when any new base or services are started (or at least announced), and we have had a chance to see how the two airlines go on to perform?

Make that 3, how far away you actually are from the destination you payed FR to take you to.

Now I dont know how many 1000s of people fly to each of thise airports miles from anywhere but im going to guess enough do it to make things worthwhile for Ryanair.

In response to A-Spalding i was only try to make the point of Big Cities (Stockholm, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Milan i think LS use the same airport dont they, Rome again LS use that airport, Frankfurt, Belgium) not Bucket & Spade routes or Cities inside UK, Ireland, Scotland etc

Huh? Your argument seems to be falling down around itself. Ryanair fly to Milan Bergamo, the same as Jet2. Ryanair fly to Rome Ciampino, which is actually twice as close to central Rome as the main airport, Fiumicino.

And have you ever considered that maybe people need to get to out of the way airports just as much as they do the big cities? Gerona is a very big Summer beach resort, if you fly to Gerona in the Summer you’ll see a ramp full of all the big charter airlines, TCX, FCA etc. Not everyone flying there intends to be in Barcelona. Or all of the destinations in Eastern Europe…Krakow, Wroclaw, Kaunas etc…just because the names don’t mean anything to you doesn’t mean that people don’t need to fly to them! There are thousands of EU citizens living in the UK who like to fly home occasionally, they weren’t all born in the ‘big cities’. Not to mention new destinations such as Ibiza, Majorca, Tenerife…I could go on.

Several years ago your argument might have had some credibility, Ryanair did go through a stage of pushing their luck slightly (Malmo advertised as Copenhagen, for example). But these days I struggle to agree with what you’re saying.

Now i know people will take this into account when buying airline tickets, but some pepole will just see FR selling cheaper tickets to LS. They wont half get a shock when FR Purser reads out Gerona-Barcelona or Frankfurt-Hahn etc

You haven’t really thought this through, have you?

Ryanair fly you miles from where you want to be… Well, yes in some cases they do, but frankly if people are too stupid to check every step of their travel arrangements before they book, they deserve to be stuck at Oslo Torp (which is 50k’s from Oslo). They also fly to plenty of mainline airports and if they can operate LBA-FAO for two thirds the price LS, what possible reason, with the exception of a personal hatred for Ryanair, is there for not flying with them?

“I’d rather fly on an old well maintained aircraft than a beast that looks like it came from Ikea”… So, you’d rather fly on a 20 year old aircraft with a worn out interior, rubbish seat pitch and the most uncomfortable seats in existence over an aircraft that will probably be less than a year old, is clean inside with reasonable seat pitch? I have no idea why, but I guess your choices are yours to make. As for maintenance and whether an old aircraft is safer or makes more sense to fly on… Well… I’m not going to waste my time by going into that. You should already know that’s utter nonsense.

Again, I’m assuming you haven’t really done much flying and I genuinely don’t mean that to come across in a patronising way, it’s just that your entire argument is based on the fact you hate Ryanair and not how the average traveller would see things. The vast majority of people don’t have the hatred for Ryanair that you do, so don’t see it your way. All they want to do is get from point A to point B and if someone can do that cheaper than whoever they’re using, I see no real reason why people wouldn’t take that option.

….but just out of interest, how far outside of London is Luton 😉

About the same distance as Stansted, I should have thought. :diablo:

Don’t get me wrong I am not trying to start a war but…..

how far away you actually are from the destination you payed FR to take you to.

I don’t know how many airports there are in Dublin, but I am pretty sure that Ryanair fly into the most central one. 😉
Same could be said with Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool to name just a few. They also serve other destinations such as Faro, Palma, Alicante, Madrid & Porto.

Now I do appreciate that they also fly to some alternative airports, (as you mentioned Girona & Hahn to name a couple) and that the quality of their marketing tactics are questionable, but just out of interest, how far outside of London is Luton 😉

People on here dont really think like a customer who knows very little about the whole industry.

No one cares how old a plane is as long as it gets them from A2B.
Hardly any will cares about the leg room on a flight under 4 hours.

People esp at the time of downturns like now only care about 2 things and that is the price and times.

Wasn’t saying that at all. I know that all aircraft to fly have to pass a airworthiness and pass other things to actually fly. I was saying that i would rather fly on a old, maintained plane than a beast that looks like it has just come out of Ikea manufacturing on the inertia.

Surely you’ve just contradicted yourself?

Are you actually suggesting that Ryanair aircraft are poorly maintained? Do they not meet your standard of airworthiness? Get Real!
