LAST EDITED ON 08-11-01 AT 05:23 PM (GMT)[p]Ryanair,is considering offering cut-price flights to America in a move that could slash the cost of air travel.
Michael O’Leary, chief executive of the airline said that the company is looking at ‘all options’ in taking over any US routes vacated by Aer Lingus.
O’Leary also said’This is not a good time for airlines like Aer Lingus, not because of terrorist attacks, but because they are mismanaged. If Aer Lingus pulls transatlantic routes or goes bankrupt, we will look seriously at it. We’d make sure that the services were provided from Ireland to the US by an Irish company.’
Do you think its likely that Ryanair could go transatlantic?

RE: Ryanair going transatlantic?
Bad idea. Transatlantic market a really competitive and fares are usually really low. Nobody can make profits at the current fares and even thinking about cutting them. That´s way there aren´t so many low cost carriers for long haul. Other point should be keeping fares low and having good booking conditions (no sunday rule, cancelations and
alterations permitted, one way tickets and so on). Most of low cost carriers for longhaul have collapsed.

RE: Ryanair going transatlantic?
I think it is a horrid idea. I thought the idea of these dreadful “no frills” airlines was to provide no service and cram as many people into as small a space as possible. If they started flying trans Atlantic, you would get a huge increase in DVT cases, and probably an increase in severely dehydrated passengers. Never mind, if you want severe dehydration for the full cost of an airline ticket you can always fly with Air New Zealand – their lack of on-board service is legendary.

RE: Ryanair going transatlantic?
How weird, your article broke my dream i had a few days ago, My local airport is Liverpool and I use it quite often. Easyjet is a large carrier based there and i dreamnt that I was considering booking on their new Liverpool-San Francisco route !! They were still using 737s, this didnt worry me, but i was a bit worried about no film, no music, and only sandwiches and pringles to eat for the whole journey !!
Being more serious, Dont see why Ryanair couldn’t do it, infact i have often wondered if or when a low-cost carrier might start such a service. I suppose their equipment is not right, but they have the money to sought that out easy enough.
