Ryanair Plane runs over fellow pilot!

Ryanair have released this photo of one of their Boeing 737-800 aircraft after it accidentally ran over Santa. Santa is said to be in a stable condiction!

Merry Christmas all!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-12-02 AT 01:43 PM (GMT)]I still think your sentiment is a little extreme. I think it is very unlikely that loco airlines are able to offer “unrealistic” fares because they can screw their suppliers.

I usually find the fares on offer about the same as the scheduled airlines personally. On two a recent trip (AMS) and an upcoming trip (Milan) both BA and LH respectively beat (handsomely) the locos on price.

The following is a good indication – Easy is cheaper, but hardly by a significant amount:

RE: Ryanair Plane runs over fellow pilot!

Because if your handling company is unlucky enough to inhabit an airport where around 80% of the traffic is low cost carriers what choice does the management have? Look, what I put in the posting is not intended to be an all encompassing critique of the low cost concept-they are a fact of airline life now. The problems that I listed were genuine, alot of very good people that I worked with lost jobs through them. Thankfully, in my case I had already gone to pastures new and I am still happy that I did. I love aviation very much, but as I am sure you’ll understand mongu, our opinions are shaped by our experiences

If ground handling companies are being scr#wed by loco airlines, why did they sign contracts with them?

RE: Ryanair Plane runs over fellow pilot!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-12-02 AT 01:37 AM (GMT)]God save us from an industry full of “Low cost carriers” Having fairly recently ended a 21 year career in aviation on the ground, I think that the only part of the overall equation that these low cost carriers are good for are the passengers!(sometimes) From a ground handling company’s point of view these carriers did no one else any favours. The problems ranged from impossible turnround fees/times and contractual conditions,to concocted delay code situations to land the poor handling agents with heavy penalty payments for “delayed” departures. This went a long way to subsidising the unrealistic fare levels that we are currently seeing. On top of this scenario, due to the ridiculous rates and conditions attatched to the handling contracts for these carriers, the standard of living of the ground staff associated with these “airlines” was ruined. It doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to work out that this process cannot be open ended! As far as running over staff are concerned I had many occasions in my job to complain to airport apron authorities ref the taxying antics of a certain “low cost carrier” ref the safety of my staff, in its pursuit of shorter turnrounds. I for one am pleased to see a turnround in the fortunes of the larger carriers,as said already on this forum, its high time the playing field was levelled ref landing and nav fees etc, then lets see how it all unfolds. Right-off the soapbox. My apologies if this mssg offends, but it is based on my own professional experience,at a fairly senior operational level, dealing with the handling of these carriers.

The future is bright-The future is Airbus!

Not a huge difference from the onboard operation side of things (except for a large difference in Flight Duty legalities). It’s more the benefits of less regulation from the Irish Aviation Authority.

What are the differences between Irish and UK operating procedures and regulations?

RE: Ryanair Plane runs over fellow pilot!

It would be nice if this all happened on a level playing field with Ryanair being forced to operate their pseudo-British airline according to British regulations as their competitors both large and small have to.

RE: Ryanair Plane runs over fellow pilot!

You see its the old senario. Remember the BBC used to have all the best sports coverage! Then along came Sky and all of a sudden the BBC coverage was almost gone, you had to subscribe to Sky or lose out.
Competition breeds change and mostly this change is for the better in the long run, the BBC have now raised their game and we have probably the best choices of sport to pick from. The BBC even allows you to pick what camera views / footy /golf games etc. you would like to view. This would not have come around if Sky never challenged their monopoly!
In my mind this is what Ryanair is doing now. We are at the low end of this “change” but it will and is forcing the big airlines to wake up and realise that if they want to survive they must change for the better. Mr O’Leary may seem arrogant but he has every right to be he has the vision to build up an airline and still pull in the profits in these very difficult times!
Good luck to him and lets hope the big airlines are paying attention!

I met Michael “Ryan” O’Leary once at Prestwick when shooting a news report on their expansion plans. I can best describe him as being “enthusiatically arrogant” if that makes sense !

Are they making money -Yes
Are they expanding when the other big airlines are reducing – Yes
All I can say is if your are willing to pay three times the price then fly with the big airlines.

Words can’t describe how angry I get over Ryanair’s approach to aviation. For example, if you want to join them as a pilot you have to pay them £50 to look at your CV!!!

RE: Ryanair Plane runs over fellow pilot!

A bit of light humour….I actually do not like Ryanair as I think it is appalling what they call a “service”. Where they claim to land is no where near where you want to be in most cases and the backup and compensation is awful.
A classic case of FR advertising is when they said “BA fly to Jersey for £?? when Ryanair can beat them for £??” Ever O’Leary needs a good geography lesson or he is trying to pull the wool over everyones eyes because the closest FR get to JER is Dinard in France! You would have to get an Aurigny flight from Dinard and even then BA would beat their prices!

No presents for me then.
I know O’Leary likes publicity for his airline, but knocking over Santa is not the answer. Couldn’t they off just mocked BA or LH? 🙂

It is nice to see an airline that has a sense of humor, it reminds me of the-gone-but-not-forgotten PSA.
