Ryanair have announced a major expansion is to take place at Liverpool Airport with the first destination to be Brussels (Charleroi) with Frankfurt being next on the agenda. Other destinations which have been spoken about are Milan,Paris,Oslo,Montpellier and Venice. A 737-800 will be based at Liverpool and they estimate the Belgian route to attract 100,000 passengers a year.
A 10 year contract has been siged between Ryanair and the airport. Easyjet who already have a major operation from Liverpool does not operate to the same destinations as Ryanair so therefore the two carriers should compliment one another well. Ryanair have been operating from Liverpool to Dublin since 1987.

RE: Ryanair sign 10 year agreement for new base
They dropped the route last winter as part of the oneworld alliance with BA – they have a 6x daily BAe J41 route instead of the Aer Lingus 3 x Daily Fokker 50s. Rumours are a EMB-145 upgrade for the LBA BA routes – DUB, LGW, DUB, ABR, IOM and Soton

Thanks good, we have 3 daily LPL-DUB although sometimes the times can be strange. I guess they may look more carefully in the future as they intend to put more routes out of here. How is Aer Lingus doing against FR out of LBA. When EI used to fly LPL-DUB they used to use a 360 mornings and evening and a 737 combi at mid-day.

Im also not mad on 737s but I flew over to Belfast last year with Easyjet and it was a “700” and found it quite nice. Been on an “800” once with Sabre (now no-more) and that was nice as well, this is the aircraft Ryanair is phasing in I beleive

I sent you an email. Did you receive it?. Well, I have to say, that new John Lennon terminal is open and it´s spectacular. Bright, airy and quite smart. It´s quite wise using just aluminium and glass in places where thére´s not much light. Despite I don´t really like the B737, I quite enjoyed the brand new B737-700. The MAD-LPL flight was quiet…and that was unusual because of the gales of the area. The flight back was in the same B737-700, but it wasn´t as enjoyable since both the take off and flight was in the middle of thick fog and lack of visibility. Something about service. Despite having to pay, Easyjet Snack bar remains quite dull in terms of variety and quite a bit too expensive. On the tarmac a lovely Electra from Atlantic Airlines and a F27 from Farnair and many, many Easyjet.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-02-02 AT 06:59 PM (GMT)]So far they do not clash destination wise. Their route networks are quite different, it would make sense to keep it that way.
p.s how was your visit ???

LPL increase in terms of passengers is quite promising, but I think Ryanair is going too fast and could collapse. They are being too risky specially after purchasing so many planes. Too low costs competing is not profiable for any of them. They should think in joining or cooperating. In LPL, they had separate niches but I don´t see a good idea Ryanair getting in Easyjet destinations. Bad for both and for the airport.

Brussels Charleroi does seem to be comming quite a hub for Ryanair, I understand a Rome link will also begin soon.

I always support my local airport if I can and will use them if I want to travel to Belgian (or any of the other destinations they may launch). Sabena never offered any connections from Liverpool, Ryanair have put their faith in serving my airport so they get thumbs up from me.
VLM for a while flew from London City to Liverpool and made a complete hash of the schedules and lost a great deal of local support to their service.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-02-02 AT 09:58 AM (GMT)]Well u said that about Sabena – proper belgian airlines – but they were actually majority shareholded by companies outside Belgium – so they were probably about as Belgian as KLM UK is Dutch!!

They won’t have my custom on the Belgian route. Although I live in the north of England, I am flying to Belgium with VLM from London City. Before Sabena went I used to fly with them from Manchester. I will stay loyal to Belgian airlines, even if I have to travel out of my way to do it.
Fly with proper Belgian airlines.
