Ryanair to start flights from Belfast City?

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/business/article2706531.ece

Would be interesting, and from my point of view with all the restrictions at BHD, very surprising!

Anyone got any thoughts?

Thats going to take an awful long time to get through the planning stage though surely, particularly with all the oppositon that would come from the BFS camp?

The same problem applies with building even a temporary structure under the terms of the rather arcane operating restrictions the airport has to endure? I’m not even going to pretend to have a knowledge of them all, but I have a feeling even a small development like that would be difficult to achieve?

There is already planning for a temporary terminal structure in place for emergency purposes (i.e. major terminal fire) as they can hire a solution on a few hours notice from McAvoys large stock. I dont think it would take long to get planning permission through if it was temporary until BHD built permanent facilities (such as a Terminal expansion).

The airport is only hindered by the passenger cap which has roughly been fullfilled already. Normal building planning rules apply – nothing special other than aviation considerations such as height etc.

Part of their current planning application is to lift cap and put a take off only runway extension on the 22 end.

Maybe Ryanair are only going to come in if they expand the runway threshold area. This would be a very good bargaining tool to use to get their planning approval as it will be seen as guarenteed local investment rather than some business plan on paper.

Will this not be one of the most significant airports ryanair will operate into given it is only 1 mile from the Terminal to City Centre? Can any other Ryanair airport beat this??

I think they will not be using the main terminal. They will redevelop or just use portacabin type airport structure (McAvoy Group provided to Dublin Airport recently and Ryanair is a long term customer of them). There is loads of space available for such a structure at the old terminal, with the portacabin route being the cheapest given the old terminal is currently a freight depot.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the FR aircraft would be based at BHD?

Ryanair could easily use aircraft ‘based’ at other airports to operate flights from Belfast City just like they do at many other airports in their network?

They could easily serve Gerona with GRO based aircraft, Stansted with STN based aircraft and Milan with BGY based aircraft… (just examples ofcourse)

One question, is there any room at Belfast City?

😉

Well there would be if they knocked down the old terminal. At the moment BHD currently has 11 nightstoppers. That means all 10 stands on the main apron being taken up and another one on the GA ramp. Only two stands can take the B738, one of which is of course is BMI only. So if RYR are moving in they would have to use the now GA ramp. Getting bussed over from the terminal. Now that would be pure Ryanair class :p .

Great news if it happens.

With that, and Aer Lingus maybe going to Aldergrove – the job prospects are potentially pretty decent.

This degree might be worth something after all :diablo:
