I can’t see why people be suffering any more on a Ryanair B738 for 4 hours without IFE and food that has to be purchased any more than on an Excel Airways flight for 4 hours+ (actually I don’t think even the B762s have IFE), or an Astraeus flight for 6 hours in A B737? The food theory is you can either take your own on, or pre-purchase in advance with the charters, with the LCC the only differance is you pay on board and not in advance?

As you know Jet2 fly 235 punters for 4 hours back up to LBA on 752s with this theory, and you tend to notice most people with IPODs, Portable DVD players or Books and Magazines (well those that aren’t asleep!).

I have to agree. 4 hours isn’t exactly a huge amount of time to spend on a plane. Is IFE really necessary for some people to fly a comparatively short flight? If it is, make up your own IFE. Bring an iPod, DVD player, book, or whatever. For me an iPod and the window is generally all the IFE I need (although the moving maps can be strangely captivating at times).

As far as food is concerned, as those who know me are aware, I’m a bit large and like my food but even I can survive 4 hours on a plane with a sandwich purchased from the terminal. Maybe I just feel like this because I’ve spent the last 11 years of my life constantly travelling by various means, but I really don’t see the big deal here beyond people simply wanting to whinge about something. As is always the case, if you don’t like it, don’t fly it!

Canary Islands???

Damn, that is going to have a huge impact on the major charter carriers, such as First Choice, Monarch, Excel…etc, as this is their biggest market isnt it?

Firstly I think anyone would have to be crazy to want to do a 4hr flight, with no food and no IFE?

Hi Cloud9,

The above posting seems to have a bit of a contridiction in there. As you suggested it may have a big impact on the Charter carriers and people must be crazy to go 4 hours without IFE and meals, well people are already doing this with the charters!

Ryanair have launched seven new routes today, although none to the Canaries. These are:

Dublin – Malta 3 x weekly
Frankfurt Hahn – Billund 3 x weekly
Luton – Malta Daily
Stansted – Perugia 3 x weekly
Pisa – Billund 4 x weekly
Pisa – Malta, Seville 3 x weekly.

Excellent news!

If you’re on a seat only deal, then no.
And many holidays have an ‘opt-out’ of the in flight meal, which, for obvious reasons, isn’t that well publicised and you’d normally ‘choose’ the food without realising.

I love plane food better then NHS Food 😀 when coming back from Canada we had Steak but I could not cut it with the plastic Knfie so i had to use my fingers which I think some people around me did not like 😎 I always think Flybe or easyjet would fly to the Canary Islands not Ryanair.

Im not giving out its just that they advertise it like its a really great prize and it tricks people into buying inflight food and drink.

My Ryanair flight was far from cheap well over €200 and I booked 3 months ago.
I had no other option to fly them as the rest of my group had alreay booked I wanted to go with AF via CDG!

Yeah but what’s the difference? You are still paying for it….

Incidentally, on my Ryanair flight home from Dublin tonight, I won a ‘free’ flight. Of course, this doesn’t include taxes. This thing that has really got me about this is the fact you have to fax the booking within 7 days. How many people have fax machines!? Added to the fact you can’t use it during peak periods, the flight probably wouldn’t end up any cheaper than if you booked a regular flight on Ryanair.com. I probably won’t end up using it.

There is food, you just have to buy it. It’s the same on many charter airlines nowadays 😉

And imagine if your flight back was cancelled…taking into account what Ryanair’s customer service standards are like?

But it’s the same as if you were stranded in Hahn, perhaps better, as there are frequent UK charter flights which sometimes sell seat only.

But will these long routes (4hours +) suit Ryanair’s business model? Still good news that they are doing the expansion, and the Canary Islands and Malta did seem to be the next logical places they would expand to.
