No-frills airline Ryanair has announced a drop in profits for the first time since stock market flotation in 1997.
Pre-tax profits fell to 228.48m euros (£152m;$282m), down from 264.55m euros.
The company has slashed ticket prices to fend off competition in its rapidly expanding network and expects passenger traffic to grow by 20% in the next year
Its figures were in line with City forecasts, analysts having slashed their expectations when the airline issued a profit warning in January.
“Our outlook for the coming 12 months remains very conservative,” said chief executive Michael O’Leary.
EU row
Last week, Ryanair said it would appeal against an EU order to repay some subsidies it received for using Charleroi airport in Belgium.
The European Commission told the Irish carrier in February to repay millions of euros in subsidies which, it said, amounted to illegal state aid.
Ryanair denounced the ruling, describing it as a setback for competition and cheap fares in Europe.
The firm said it had filed an appeal to the European Court of First Instance.

Minidoh finnaly we can agree on somthing. The flag carriers and normal service airlines like EI,BA and BD are much better.Maybe slightly more expensive but alot better.Im not anti LCC but thats just me.Altough I have no dobuts that both airlines are very safe.
I dont really know whey Aer Lingus stopped NCL maybe low loads or they have began to concentrate more on European routes.I wouldnt be surprised to see them come back to the route as Ryanair dominate it at present and Aer Lingus returned to Bristol this year so its definitley not an impossiblity.

Sorry im with easy. And by the way why did aer lingus stop flying to NCL?
By: MINIDOH - 4th June 2004 at 17:35
Shamrock, I think Easy arent safe too, not just Ryanair. I am anti low-cost carriers all together, not just an Irish one. I agree that I am bound to be more biased towards English airlines because I’m English. But, I would prefer to fly and would recommend Aer Lingus to anyone, certainly not Easyjet.
By: SHAMROCK321 - 4th June 2004 at 09:43
Of course Im biased just like most things in life.Im a Ryanair fan and he is an Easyjet fan. This is the last post Im going to make in this thread. Both Ryanair and Easyjet have changed air travel in Europe forever.Yes I did say Easyjet.I mightnt like them but I can not deny them something that they have done.Ryanair are just as safe ad s any other airline flying in Europe as are Easyjet. But I honestly think alot of British people get a bit annoyed when a Irish carrier is doing well in their country.Thats my opinion.I would like to apoligise to anybody who I caused offence to.I was expressing my opinions and I still belive in them.if there was more Irish people here we might have more Ryanair fans but their is alot of British people here so like me you are bound to be biased.
THE END.

Dan, would you be so kind as to tell me what the reg. was on that Go aircraft! So to put my mind at rest if you see what I mean! 😮

If the sole indicator of a “successful” airline is its balance sheet, and to many people that IS the sole indicator, then it has to be conceded that Ryanair is successful. But I think that there are many more indicators that point to the overall success or otherwise of an airline other than its balance sheet. Ryanair has a lamentable record in other areas. EZY is not immune from this syndrome, they just seem to come across better, perhaps not having M.O’L at the top there may be a clue! I don’t know.

I’ll take your advice, but i do think the irishman is a bit biased.
Concordesst, out.
By: Arabella-Cox - 3rd June 2004 at 21:06
I’m not getting involved, I’d leave it concordesst before the whole thing starts again!
By: concordesst - 3rd June 2004 at 21:03
Minidoh your just another mindless idiot who honestly thinks that Ryanair put its passengers in real danger.
I know your an irish man (well i think you are by your name) and you are bound to stick for an Irish Airline with an irish CE. As i would with say BA. But the post below yours that i have quoted are correct, the mirror should not be dirty and this infact does put passengers safety at risk.
Another opinion.
And no-one is a mindless idiot, if you can talk like bmussed or mindoh i’d be proud.

dont know if anyone has said this on here but i bet the profits have fell because most of the fliers were belgiun.

I would prefer to stay out of this argument, simply because I do not have a strong enough opinion on the facts to argue. But one thing I want to say is how many things in the aviation industry are hidden. And not always on purpose. Take a look at the corrosion on this ex-Go aircraft I took from the FLS hangar. The week before this had been flying passengers, it was only because it was due for a C-check that they found the corrosion. And I’m not turning this anti-EZY either, I’m just highlighting how you may never know what’s happening behind the scenes, no matter who the airline is.
This is at the joint between the elevator and the fuselage.

Calm down people, we don’t want more disruptions like in the past if you know what I mean?
By: Bmused55 - 3rd June 2004 at 20:41
I know Pilots do not want to fly unsafe aircraft. But in an industry where pilots are being laid off they can;t afford to loose a job either.
I’m also told that Ryanair Pilots get wages docked for delays, regardless of circumstances. They don’t get paid all that much in the first place.
A pilot was unfairly dismissed from Ryanair for a similar incident involving an unsafe aircraft. He took Ryanair to court and lost. He ended up paying for court costs. So, Pilots are in a no win situation at Ryanair.
By: SHAMROCK321 - 3rd June 2004 at 16:56
Bmused I belive that to be 100% untrue.Strange I never heard a thing about it.If it did happen Ryanair would be sued for unfair dismissal. When incidnets like that occour and they do all over the place in many many different types of buissness the pilots colleauges would have got behind him and gone on strike.Pilots will not fly unsafe airplanes and thats a fact.Who would want to go and fly something that they know they might lose control over.

Ah right, cant remember that… I might have a search round for it.
By: Bmused55 - 3rd June 2004 at 13:28
Can’t remember the exact date, it was last year I believe.
By: LBARULES - 3rd June 2004 at 13:16
When was this?
