Can someone help me with the following……….
I am currently building a couple of Russian model kits – the S-300PMU – in both 5P85S :- http://www.aviapress.com/viewonekit.htm?PST-72050 and 5PS85D http://www.aviapress.com/viewonekit.htm?PST-72055 versions.
I want to display one in its transport configuration – and the other errected ready to launch.
But…..
I also want to display at least one of the missiles inside the launch tube (they are all supplied in the kit).
My question is – is the cover on the launch tube a frangible membrane that only breaks up when the missile is launched – or is it a more solid cover that is removed/opens outwards prior to firing??
In other words – could I legitimately display my model with the tubes vertical, with three of them with the covers on, but the fourth open – showing the nose of the missile inside ??
And – if it is a ‘solid’ cover – how does it open ?? Does it fold backwards – or slides off etc
Or should I just claim artistic licence and do it that way anyway ??
Any help appreciated…….
Ken
PS – PST have just released the same MAZ 543 chassis with the radar body on the back – so you could have a complete fire section – as soon as they release a kit of the command vehicle.

FWIW – and I know its not a modelling forum – but here are some pics of my finished S-300 models.
They comprise the 5P85S and 5P85D TEL’s plus the radar vehicle.
……. with a SCUD thrown in for good measure

Yes, I specially ask at the last MAKS. If anyone need, I can mail these photo in full resolution.
Are you going to be at MAKS 05 ???
Can you come round with us and be our interpreter ??
Then we can ask all these questions directly – with you help ??
I try my best with my limited Russian – but I just get lost when the guys reply. I can manage to ask for two beers in the Baltika tent – but asking the crew about a gas generator would be totally beyond me 😉

Are you sure about that one?

Are you sure about that one? There should be a lot more compressed gas available, as the missile is cold-launched (i.e. the motor ignites after ejection from the tube).

The gas generator that open the canister.

That’d be it. That big pointy thing on the right pokes through the pie-looking thing on the left when all the gas is blown to cold-launch the missile.
Like this:

It’s a frangible cover that is demolished when the missile is ejected at launch.

They all employ the same chassis – and the two missile launchers are basically the same – with just a different box structure behind the engine/cab.
The one with the “box” houses the command post for the other slaved launchers. For a missile battery, you’d want a 30N6 radar, one of the 5P85S TELs (with the box), and three of the 5P85D TELs (sans box).
For completion they should make a 76N6 CLAM SHELL radar on a mast 😀

Awesome man! I don’t know that is actually a S-300 model kit available.I myself also wanted to build one.How is the quality and detail of the kit.But from the scale of 1/72.I think it is quite expensive for of a price of 49.99.
It sell for 20 UK pounds over here – with the newly released radar vehicle coming is at 30 quid :- http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=PST72060
For all three – see :- http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?CATEGORY=1&DIVISION=0&MANUFACTURER=&CODE=&TYPE=&SCALE=1%3A72&KEYWORD=SA-10&NUMPERPAGE=25&order%5B%5D=arrived+desc&order%5B%5D=code+asc

They are fairly simple kits – but with lots of parts, most of which need to be cleaned up.
I have ‘bent’ the axles on one of the TEL’s – as I think that it looks much nicer with the four front wheels turned. The other one will have the wheels straight (as supplied) but with the launch tubes vertical and the outriggers/stabilisers deployed.
The whole missile tube assembly can be posed up or down – complete with actuating ram.
They will go nicely alongside my resin SCUD-B –

PS – I hope PST will bring out a whole range of these 8-wheeled TEL’s based on the MAZ 534 chassis – the potential is enormous.

It’s a frangible cover that is demolished when the missile is ejected at launch. The canisters are sealed, so you can basically ignore them for around 20 years and they’ll still fire.
Bugger !!!!
Artistic licence it is then…………..
Ken
PS – I should have taken more photos at MAKS 01 :- http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/visits_pages/moscow_day06.html
