The Viggen for its time was a VERY advanced aircraft, sharing many components with the American F-14 and have been upgraded by Sweden constantly well into the 90s while production only ended in 1990. For the past while there have been many smaller, more ‘budget conscious’ South American and African countries buying refurbished aircraft, Cheetahs, Kfirs, F-5s, newly built F-7G etc. variants and I had me thinking why ex-Swedish Air Force Viggens that have been retired have not been offered for sale? Its not as if many of these countries could even afford the Gripen in the first place so there’s no harm to Gripen sales and the Viggen is a short-medium range, multi-role aircraft which would be very well suited for countries just interested in air defence/air policing.
