A few other Saab Safir’s
In my initial training for air traffic controller I’ve made quite a number of flights in Saab 91D Safir aircraft of the Rijksluchtvaartschool Holland (Government Flying School). It was a very nice aircraft to fly, only retracting the landing gear was a bit hairraising at first. You had to push a lever forward to do so (which required quite a bit of strength), but inexperienced students then also had a tendency to push the control column forward too! There are still a few examples of those 91D’s in airworthy condition in the Netherlands. The Rijksluchtvaartschool altogether operated 8 Saab 91A Safir (1950-1960) and 22 Saab 91D Safir (1960-1982) aircraft for the initial training phase.
A few pictures from 1965

And a few more recent ones

G-ANOK needs a loving owner now. £5k is mooted..
”Saab Safir in a fairly neglected state. This aircraft has been left outside for 20yrs and it shows. Having said that it has no obvious damage and I couldn”t see any corrosion to the airframe. The wings were removed and stored indoors so they should be very good. Engine is a Lycoming 0-435 6cyl 190hp. There is a spare crated engine for sale seperately.
I am going to get some photos taken this week and upload them as well as a video. Google the reg and there are a few photos of it on the net.
Please get in touch only if you are serious.
I think this plane could fly again but would need an awful lot of time and money thrown at it.”

Eventually found these of NOK at East Fortune. The first picture is not mine and was taken in the hangar that was used to store items.

I always think the Safir looks like a lovely aeroplane …………
It’s a very elegant and popular aeroplane .. recently someone tried to purchase the ex-Royal Norwegian AF example at Newark, which itself was briefly on the UK Register in the mid-1980s!

Yes I would love to see them Robert.

I always think the Safir looks like a lovely aeroplane but what a strange undercarriage – why so short and squat – surely this must increase the risk of prop strike…………
I think once the gear is up the aircraft just looks ‘right’ – what do other people think ??
cheers

Have the photo’s of G-ANOK in front of me after my friend and I dismantled it for the owner at Strathallan airfield where it had been stored for some time. From memory it was owned by a chap called Gault who arrived with his daughter and another chap with a long trailer. The aircraft was loaded by myself and my friend and was in good condition when it left for the owners home in the borders,Kelso and 1987/8 I think.
The aircraft was needing re certified, paint was in good condition but the red stripe down the middle was fading.
Hope you find it, was to good to leave to rot.
Alan.

“and now is laying in a barn on the Scottish Borders “
Sounds more like a chicken than an aeroplane. Perhaps someone living in the Scottish border region can send me a Safir egg!

“It ended up in the East Fortune Museum in Scotland for a time when it was retired from service and now is laying in a barn on the Scottish Borders and no possible chance of restoration and re flying. A sad end to a very nice aeroplane.
I have fond memories of it, even though I was only 7 or 8 years old at the time.”
