Found this over on PPRuNe. Its a fascinating record and account of a mid-air collision during an exercise between a USAF F-86A Sabre from RAF Sheppards Grove and a Gloster Meteor F.8 from RAF Duxford.

Merrist Wood Halifax
Rich,
I haven’t researched the Merrist Wood incident as has already been covered in the book “Guildford, The War Years”.
If you e-mail me at frank.phillipson@ntlworld.com I can attach the images of the two pages and send them to you.
Regards,
Frank.

I’ll check them and drop you a PM if anything turns up.
Another excellent write up about the Dakota crash. I was aware of this one and
enjoyed watching the DC-3 do a spirited flyby at the unveiling of the memorial plaque.
I don’t suppose you’ve written anything about the Halifax shot down by ‘friendly fire’, crashing on what is now Merrist Wood golf course have you?
I’ll be in touch via PM in the next week or so once I’ve dug last year’s Flypast issues out.
Thanks again,
R.

Sabre/Meteor and other Guildford story.
Rich,
If you could look at your past issues that would be great. Think there was a F86 Sabre in the spot light section in the September issue?
You might also be interested in another Guildford aviation story I wrote at:-

Best wishes,

I have all the issues of Flypast from the past 12 years. I’ll check over last years’ and see if I can find the article you speak of. Drop me a PM if you want further information.
The piece you wrote in the Guildford Dragon is superb – most informative. As a 30 year old who has lived in Guildford all my life, I was most interested to read of the collision – an incident I previously knew nothing about.
Many thanks,
Rich.

Sabre & Meteor collision
As the author I’m glad you both liked the article.
I’ve been told by a friend of a friend that in an issue of Flypast last year there had been an article or the mention in an article of the incident?
As I do not always get Flypast I cannot check. Any ideas?
Best wishes,
Frank.

Interesting, well researched article. As mentioned S/L Peter Thompson was later responsible for establishing the Historic Aircraft Flight at Biggin Hill in 1957. Now, of course, the BBMF.
