Just watched a British documentary about the Iraqi Nuclear Bombprogram. Seems that already 2 years before the start of the gulfWar iraq was capable of producing a nuclear weapon.
An underground testexplosion was made on 19 september 1989 near the lake of Rezzazza (east of baghdad). The bomb was almost as powerfull as the one used on Hiroshima and was a nuke bomb of the ‘gun-design’ (simple version). The enriched uranium was delivred by South-Africa.
The bomb had 2 subcritical masses of uranium 235 wich when braught togheter gave the explosion. To avoid detection from the outside world the test made use of a ‘decoupled explosion’ wich is harder to detect.
The Rezzazza complex is a huge miltary area wich also suffered from US bombattacks on its facilities during Desertstorm’ but because it was never seen as a site where nukes were developped no special care was taken. Also were there never inspections afterwords from UN-teams.
The journalist was Gwynne roberts.
