Saints Pictures 1970 – ??

I first moved into the area of RAF St Athan in 1970- when my father was posted to 4 SoTT as a ground instructor. I gained great access to this interesting airfield including all the workshops, but my father was a stickler for protocol and security etc and although he would show me around he insisted that I left my camera at home. However anything taken from outside the fence was fair game as far as he was concerned. So here are some of my collection from these long ago days, starting off primarily with Shackletons as this was the type that was being processed at a great rate at that time. What a shame these airframes are now long gone with very few bits surviving (although I have some in my office!!!!).

I hope you enjoy.

First up is Shackleton Mr3/3 WR979.

Now an Mr2, WR962. I am not sure if this one had just arrived at the Picketstone site or whether it was just being moved ready for some other new arrivals.

Victor XA931, I think I have already posted this one elsewhere but its always good to see a Victor in the anti flash colour scheme.

Another one of WR 962, now all safely picketed.

I thought I would finish off with a few from the Battle of Britain display of 1970. I must have been very taken with the sight of a Beaufighter sitting in the sunshine as I took several photos.

Thanks Simon, knew they were here somewhere!
Here’s that link you posted, http://members.multimania.co.uk/rafstathan/
Some great shots on there.

Hi Tony, I haven’t seen pics of WT648 at Saints, however you have reminded me that the P1 on the Provost picture that QP has posted could stand for ‘Painters 1’ from the refinishing section.

Found them James!

In the second there is a link to the South Wales Aviation Group which shows the aircraft at the different airshows over the years.
