Sorry guys ‘n’ gals, I thought I had already posted this, but it does not seem to be here, so, I will try again…..
Does anyone know which re-enactor group accompany Sally B at air shows? (dressed as her WW2 crew.)
Alternatively, does anyone know of a group who dress as WW2 USAAF bomber crew?
Here’s hoping

Cannot say how advanced they are with the engine but the blue cover was still on yesterday.

I’m totally in agreement with the people who say a change would be nice but the priority is to keep her flying. I don’t think there’d be any change out of a year of my wages for a complete repaint.
They have enough problems keeping the poor old girl airworthy without worrying about whether they can afford to give her a new dress for the summer.

Whilst she is looking like she needs a new coat of paint and it would be nice to see her represent a different B17, I seem to recall that back in 1984 or 85 when she was painted OD with the yellow tail, it cost something like £8K for a repaint which I think this was sponsored by the airline SAS IIRC.
I wonder just how much it would cost to paint her today?
£30-40K perhaps?
Maybe they could start a fund raising scheme but if they are having trouble finding funds to keep her flying due to increased costs over the last few years, I guess a repaint is fairly low on the agenda. 🙁
But maybe if someone like Richard Branson stepped in with his cheque book, or a film company , it might be possible. 😉
However, as long as they keep her away from Dambusters 2 ‘Judgement Day’ and it’s not painted like a Virgin airliner, I’ll be quite happy!
Cheers

All we need is another film company to come along to make a WW2 film again
Shush! 😡
Don’t let the guys doing the Dambusters 2 ‘Judgement Day’ hear you.

Repainting an aircraft the size of “Sally B” is a very expensive job! She is struggling with costs to keep her in the air, so only a sponsor would probably be able to pay for a repaint. Please remember that the present scheme was paid for by the film company so she could star in “Memphis Belle”. All we need is another film company to come along to make a WW2 film again

Don’t mention red bull as a sponser……..
i don’t care, she’s fine as she is.

It’s time she reprisented another combat veteran.

I think a repaint would be somewhat “Nice but not nessecary” .
Don’t mind what she wears aslong as shes flying…..

Isnt the paint to help with preservation as she is kept outside for six months of the year? Got to admit though id like to see different colours but lets keep her in the air first and worry about the paint later. i preffer tatty looking aircraft myself, more about them.

And did the combat B17s she commemorates always look immaculately turned out?
Moggy
Would you prefere to see her rot?, A good paint job will preserve her especially as she is outside.

Can’t argue with that, but there was more than one combat B17. I’m sure that if the team looking after Sally B worked on this they could get a good bare metal paint job done for a good price. It’s time she reprisented another combat veteran.

Personally, I prefer my aircraft to look a little tatty and used. Those super glossy, mirror finish jobs never look quite right to me.

Considering the problems that they have had in getting insurance cover, I think re-painting the aircraft might be a bit low on the list of priorities 😉

Is there anybody involved with Sally B that can tell if there are any plans to repaint her? She’s worn those markings for 18 years or so & she’s looking very untidy, surely a seperate fundraising scheme to repaint her could be arranged?

As of today (28/05) ‘Sally B’ will NOT be at Madingly on Monday 😡 . Thank you very much EU Regulation (EC) 785/2004 Ref C. and the do-nothing UK Government for allowing this situation to continue.

Doesn’t it go something like this…
P51D ‘Ferocious Frankie’ – OFMC, DX
P51D ‘Twilight Tear’ – TFC, DX
P51C ‘Princess Elizabeth’ – TFC, DX (under restoration)
P51D ‘Susy’ – RAC, Breighton
P51D ‘Miss Helen’ – Robs Lamplough, Bristol?
P51D ‘Jumpin’ Jacques’ – Peter Teichman, North Weald
P51D ‘Big Beautiful Doll’ – Rob Davies, Woodchurch
P51D ‘Janie’ – Maurice Hammond, Hardwick?Foreign:
P51D ‘Nookie Bookie IV’ – France
P51D ‘Damn Yankee’ – Holland, SHF
P51D ‘Old Crow’ – Sweden, RNLAF Historic Flight
P51D ‘Double Trouble II’ – Switzerland?Any more in Europe I’ve missed? That makes a total of 11 P51Ds and 1 P51C in Europe 😀
Anyway, very nice photo, it just isn’t the same not seeing her in the air at DX 🙁
Not trying to be a petty jerk here, (then again, yes I do 😉 😀 ) but why have you sold the SHF “Old Crow” to the Dutch and given them “Damn Yankee” in return!!! :diablo:
Speaking of “Old Crow”, I just got a reply on a forum that the engine has been fitted, and that the plane is to be test flown this weekend. Trust we’ll see the viking horde at Duxford for leg ends. If not I will have to keep busy on my own, looting, raping, and generally behaving bad! Just as we Norwegians have done on vacation in Britain for the last 1000+ years… :p

The NOTAM lists her but who knows…
Think it states 16 (4×4) F15’s and 2xP51 and single B17
The Sally B website lists her as
30 Mon Madingley – US Military Cemetery Memorial flypast at 1200
But who knows…
