Sally B needs your help

Received the Sally B news yesterday, on page is 6 is the following “………….but the basic truth is that unless we get a lot more money in to meet the massive costs of keeping our B17 going – next year will be her last.”

A little bit on google returns the charity overview

Kelly Brook for B17 PR !!!

My suggestion is they employ Kelly Brook as the PR ‘Face’ of Sally B.

As the RIAT organisers delight every year in telling us, 75% of visitors to airshows are not Aviation Enthusiasts they are Joe public and are more interested in shopping !

So if the B17 needs more money surely they need to appeal to the wider public and the Enthusiast cash cow is sounding very poor!. Kelly Brook is a beautiful woman who IMHO has suffered from really bad management and I can’t help feeling this would be ideal for both parties.

Kelly painted on the nose of Sally B HMMMMM 😉

Speaking of the An2, isn’t the ASz621 engine a licence-built copy of the Wright R-1820 Cyclone?

Do you really think they paid licence fees?

Sally-B is on the Shoreham participation list, so I’d take that as they are taking show bookings! 🙂

I’ve also seen reference on another forum that she’s booked for Pardubice in the Czech Rep.

In post 24, 9th December i said id emailed via the contact us link from their web site. Still waiting for a response.

To compare, a couple of years ago i saw ML407 display at a proms concert and my photos showed fluid leaking from mid wing which i have never noticed before, anyway i emailed the contact details on ML407s site to express concern and within 24hrs Carolyn had responded direct confirming it was nothing to worry about as it is normal and gave an explanation as to what was happening and thanked me for my concern.

Does this show that it really does come down to the person conected with the site and how IT aware they are? Again in comparison in a totaly non aviation issue, I email a company I use and they blank me, then says they are busy and i pay £600 a year for this so its not just enthusiasts web sites

sally b re-vamp

I think it might be time for a little change, but i fully understand that money is really tight so i think we would all prefer to see her flying than not at all, but heres my idea:

* Make her an ‘F’ model proper by getting rid of the chin turret and giving the plane a bit of a scheme change, i was imagining along the line of a battle 10 to 20 mission look!?
I think removing the memphis belle logo and having the sally b nose art on both sides and maybe some bombing missions markings would help with her identity.
Also looking with a purely artistic point of view i would like to see a couple of guns sticking out the sides of the nose, i think this would help make it look battle ready, and sticking a few fibre glass bombs in the racks so when there is a fly over we can see the bombs ready to be dropped!
Just a couple of ideas!

Also i hear Hanks/Spielberg are looking into doing a WW2 mini series about the mighty 8th, fingers crossed that happens soon and they want to do it on location in England, that will surely be a massive boost to all B-17’s even if sally b isnt a part of it.

Surely the B-17 in the RAF museum would be a more suitable candidate for an RAF paint scheme?

……along with the B-25 and P-51. In much the same way that the 2 Spitfires, Beaufighter and Mosquito at Dayton are all displayed in USAAF markings.

Fully agree with Robbo that Sally B should always remain in USAAF colours, as she has always been a flying memorial to the young Americans that lost their lives flying from this county in WW2

Surely the B-17 in the RAF museum would be a more suitable candidate for an RAF paint scheme?

I suppose so and I wonder how big a say she has. After all it is her inheritance, in a way, and when interviewed at Duxford, she always comes across as positive, but realistic, inestimably grateful to her supporters and totally committed to her “baby”, so let’s hope common sense prevails.

I raised the funding issue on another forum at the same time as this one started and wrote to Elly shortly afterwards. In that letter I advised of the links to both threads, here and elsewhere, and I received an acknowledgement shortly after. What happens next is down to the Trustees I would assume.

However I have recieved a private e mail from a friend at Duxford advising that history shows that the operators of SallyB are singlular minded as in only interested in hearing ideas etc on how to raise big money support rather than consider changing what a supporter would be offerred.

Jay

It is very disappointing to hear that they do not listen to those, without whom, their dream would have been shattered a long time ago.

I agree with your comments and hope we might hear more positive feedback in the weeks to come.

[QUOTE=I certainly do support a refreshed marketing campaign and better PR, more “hands-on” involvement at air shows and better rewards for those who subscribe.

But whatever it takes is what really matters and I hope the right decisions are made to enable us to enjoy her in the UK skies for as long as possible.[/QUOTE]

Think Charlie has hit the nail on the head with this comment, without the subscribers who keep on supporting every year, Sally B would not have been in the air for so long.
I was hoping that someone from this forum had brought this thread to the attention to the sallyB group and there may have been some form of statement issued that they had taken some of the constructive comments on board.
However I have recieved a private e mail from a friend at Duxford advising that history shows that the operators of SallyB are singlular minded as in only interested in hearing ideas etc on how to raise big money support rather than consider changing what a supporter would be offerred.
Think how many investors there would be if the same offer was made to those who could only afford £200 a year compared to those at £400 per year, I am sure at £200 per year you could attract upto 3 times as many or have choices for different levels of donations such as £100, £200 etc offering you a choice of what you would recieve instead of just a blanket level of £400, honestly how many of us can afford a straight £400 where as more could afford a £100 donation? In which case the SallyB operaters would attract far more investers than they do now, which may also cut the negative feeling by some of the constant same begging letters recieved every 6 months.
Summing up the SallyB operaters need to widen thier thoughts and remember that everybody now looks for more for thier money not less ie, years ago a member would recieve 2 coloured magazines, a news letter, membership card, and a picture of SallyB, now your lucky to get one magazine ( if it arrives), one newsletter, membership card ( if it arrives) and 2 begging letters which always arrive.
I want to see Sally B still flying in 20 yrs time for my grandchildren and thier children to see however that will only be achieved by those who are in charge of the aircraft taking on board what others suggest and not just dismissing them because they never thought of it themselves first or that they may have to give before they recieve.
All the above is solely my opinion of course as an outsider, but sometimes its the opinions of outsiders which those on the inside miss because they are always on the inside.

Regards

Jay
