Sally B out and about

Horham Airfield (another Suffolk ex USAF base) held their annual Grand Open Day yesterday. Well done to all concerned. There appeared to be a significant number of veterans and their families present this year. It’s always great to see this link so strongly maintained. Planned BBMF flypast cancelled for obvious reasons but much appreciated to have a series of passes over the old runway by Sally B. Tried to upload a few pictures but uncooperative technology.

A ‘new’ engine normally requires running in, slow timing it used to be called by the B-17 crews. The advice now on light aircraft is high power runs with a straight oil until oil consumption has stabilised. This suggests that some oil loss is normal which can only be past the rings.

I don’t know whether Sally Bs engine is new or not, no doubt someone will soon provide the answer. However, I’m sure the crew were keeping a close eye on Ts and Ps at the time.

With reference to the DX thread, it wasn’t just us that noticed the smoke trail then, honestly, the smell of burning oil when she taxied past was very strong, if you all think that this is normal with a ‘new’ engine then, fine, we were just a bit worried at the time.
Was there always a problem with port outers on B-17’s, we were looking at the increasingly very faded B-17 in the AAM on sunday and noticed that of all of it’s engines, the port outer had more oil stains along the nacalle than the others, or was this the engine that was swapped following the incident in the making of ‘Memphis Belle’.

It was a very welcome display, the 20 veterans were very appreciative. There was a noticeable plume from no. 1, this being the new engine I believe. Hope all is well, possibly just a sign of rings bedding in?

She trundled over my house on both her outbound and return legs – had to laugh when my neighbour said “It’s a Lancaster!”.

Thought I noticed a slight smoke trail from the port outer …
