Sand storm over Phoenix, Arizona

On the BBC 6 o’clock news programme this evening there was footage of a large sand storm approaching Phoenix. Sand having a somewhat abrasive effect on a lot of materials, made me wonder if any museums and their exhibits might be in potential harms way ?

Nice pic Jason! I was on a return flight from Denver last night and we arrived at Sky Harbor in unison with another huge dust storm. We had just turned onto long final when the airport was shut down! We circled Phoenix for about 30 minutes and watched most of the city get enveloped in one of these trash movers! I had not witnessed it from that vantage point before, pretty impressive really. Are you living in the Phoenix area? I’ve been wanting to meet up with Scotty G. and get some info from him for a future RB-51 project. If you’re in the area we should all get together over some good food and talk airplanes! Best regards,

Chad Veich

Hey Chad,
I work nights and I was just getting back to work from lunch when last nights big storm hit. If you were only 10 min. earlier you would have been good.
I live in Chandler and Scott lives out in Awhatukee so we get together now and then to fly and shoot the sh#t. We’ll all have to get together for lunch or something sometime; PM me either thru this board or thru Scotty’s site.
See ya

Thanks, Chad, it just looked a bit nasty to me – we don’t get any sandstorms here in the green and pleasant land, just the occasional mini-twister and more rain than we really need !

We would certainly take some of that rain if you wanted to send it our way! The dust storms here certainly make a mess of things (like my swimming pool) but rarely do any serious damage. The biggest threat is wind damage I suppose, as wind speeds can get quite high during some of the bigger storms.

Nothing to fear, dust storms are standard operating procedure here during the summer. I don’t even bother to look outside anymore! Blowing dust and possible thunderstorms are expected every day this week matter of fact.

Chad (in the Phoenix area obviously)
