Hi there,
This piece of sad news just ran in (sorry, Danish only for now):
http://takeoff.dk/news.cfm?nNewsWeekly=0&nNewsId=16187
They just announced a net loss of over a SEK one billion for Q1. Lay-offs of 1.000 people. 11 planes will be grounded for the winter, and – what’s really sad IMO – SFO and DEL is dropped. Guess they weren’t axing SEA for the A340 there anyway (or let’s see..)
_______
argh i was so excited for the return of SAS in DEL. I did most of my Europe trips earlier with SAS only. Brilliant 11:30 am departure unlike most European airlines that operate to Del… leave after midnight. Also the flight over the Hindukush duriong day time was amazing.

Yes, I think the title of this thread is perhaps a little unrealistic. Seems like a fairly normal efficiency strategy to me, and whilst losses in the first quarter of this year at SAS were 10 times greater than last year, I do think there are plenty of airlines out there who would love their first quarter results…Alitalia included, although they have now had another ‘stay of execution’ witha €30o million ‘loan’ from the Italian government, which is just a disaster….what do they want to happen to their airline??

I can’t properly translate the article but, surely, laying off staff and mothballing a/c for the coming winter is something several airlines have announced and doesn’t (automatically) mean greater impending doom than the others?
Low cost competition and almost impossible fuel cost increases will,I’ll wager, see off several airlines in the coming weeks and I doubt SAS is near the top of the likely list.If Alitalia was already in intensive care, where is it now do you reckon?

I think the Norweigans will make sure than LH is not involved in any way.
What and see there national carrier do down and have no carrier left apart from low cost airlines aswell as a few links to the east and west i dont think so.If LH need to get involved they will as it is a fellow star alliance partner!!!

Yea, more bad news for this once great airline. Things are just getting worse and worse for them.
I used to have a real soft spot for SAS, and even when they started to turn into what is basically now a low cost airline, I still enjoyed the experience. Now though, I have pretty much pulled the plug on using them. I still enjoy the MD-80s but that’s about all.
I wonder if LH will get involved? They seem to have good results with turning round failing airlines, and continue to make a handsome profit even in these days of mega bucks fuel prices.
It’s a shame to see this airline slip. All the stories in the “good old days” of SAS being THE Company to work for if you lived in Scandinavia, and being so proud to be part of the team. To now, where arguing, striking and union rule seem to be the main focus.
